Ciccone (band)
Ciccone were a London-based indie rock band active in the 2000s, fronted by Rebekah Delgado and Micky Ciccone, both on vocals and guitar. They released their first recording in 2001, the "Forget Your False Messiahs" EP; which was made Single of the Week by Steve Lamacq on his Evening Session show on BBC Radio 1. Their debut album, ''Eversholt Street'', named after the Camden street it was recorded on, was released in 2004, and reviewed widely by the popular music press. Kerrang! rated it 4/5, describing it as a "a cheeky dose of new wave shenanigans". The North West Daily Mail said that their lyrics were "direct, subversive, and funny". The band broke up after playing a final gig in 2007, supporting Art Brut at the London Astoria. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Rebekah Delgado
Rebekah Delgado is a British singer-songwriter based in Andalucía, Spain. Delgado co-fronted London indie rock group Ciccone in the 2000s, before starting a solo career. Her first solo album ''Don't Sleep'' was Album in the Month in ArtRocker magazine in October 2012, being described as a "stunning debut" that "successfully blends cabaret, Nick Cave, flamenco, and Scott Walker with Delgado's breathless and occasionally seductive vocals". IndieLondon wrote that it was "diverse collection of songs that underlines Delgado as a distinct and playful artist who defies easy categorisation or comparison." Keith Top of the Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band is a London-based indie rock band led by singer-songwriter Keith Top of the Pops (born Keith Mahony). The band was formed at an Art Brut gig in New York City in 2006, after a support band dropped out, and Keith, who had produced Art Brut's first two singles, played some of his songs with members of Art Brut. The band has subsequently featured a rotating line-up of musicians, with two rules, of avoiding soundchecks and never having rehearsals. The band has released three albums. The first, ''Fuck You! I'm Keith Top of the Pops'' (released in 2011), was given 5 stars by and made Album of the Month by Artrocker. Steve Lamacq
Stephen Paul Lamacq (born 16 October 1964), sometimes known by his nickname Lammo (given to him by John Peel), is an English disc jockey, currently working with the BBC radio station BBC Radio 6 Music. Early life He attended The Ramsey Academy from 1976, which had been formed the previous year from two grammar schools. He was brought up in the Essex village of Colne Engaine. Early career He cites Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "wonderful" 1979 single "Electricity" as his inspiration to become a disc jockey, noting that he wanted to afford air time to similar, "curious" music. Prior to launching this career, he studied Journalism at Harlow College, Essex, and worked as a junior reporter at the ''West Essex Gazette''. In similar fashion to other music journalists who started fanzines during their teenage years, Lamacq started one called ''A Pack of Lies''. Art Brut
Art Brut are a Berlin-based English and German indie rock band. Their debut album, '' Bang Bang Rock & Roll'', was released on 30 May 2005, with its follow up, ''It's a Bit Complicated'', released on 25 June 2007. Named after French painter Jean Dubuffet's definition of outsider art – art by prisoners, loners, the mentally ill, and other marginalized people, and made without thought to imitation or presentation – South London's Art Brut were tagged by ''NME'' as part of the "Art Wave" scene that also included bands such as The Rakes, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. London Astoria
The London Astoria was a music venue at 157 Charing Cross Road, in London, England. Originally a warehouse during the 1920s, the building became a cinema and ballroom. It was converted for use as a theatre in the 1970s. After further development, the building re-opened in the mid-1980s, as a night club and live music venue for well-known musical acts. There are half a dozen clubs and smaller music venues in the adjacent buildings. In 2009 the venue closed, and was demolished as part of the development plans of the Crossrail project. The venue is still seen today as having been an iconic music establishment, as it helped to launch the careers of many British rock bands and also played a part in the UK success of many international acts. Eddie Argos
Eddie Argos (born Kevin Macklin 25 October 1979) is the lead singer of English rock band Art Brut, and writer of comics. Personal life Born in Weymouth, England, Argos later moved to Poole, Dorset as a young child, and has subsequently written about the Kemp-Welch School there (now St Aldhelm's Academy), in the song "Martin Kemp-Welch Five-A-Side Football Rules!" from the album ''Brilliant! Tragic!''. Music Argos is the lead singer of the rock band Art Brut, and sometimes plays the bass guitar in Keith TOTP. Argos is also the lead singer of the project Everybody Was in the French Resistance...Now!, in which he and multi-instrumentalist Dyan Valdes of The Blood Arm write musical responses to pop songs.
