Cibo Matto
Cibo Matto (, Italian for "crazy food") was an American alternative rock band formed by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori in New York City in 1994. Initially, the band's lyrics were primarily concerned with food, before expanding into broader subject matter following the addition of Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis, and Duma Love to the band for their second studio album. While Honda and Hatori are Japanese expatriates, the group initially did not gain as large a following in Japan as it did in the United States. Their first album ''Viva! La Woman'' sold 40,000 copies in Japan, but was more successful in the U.S., with over 74,000 copies sold. Over time, the group's following in Japan grew, which resulted in their signing to Japanese record label Commmons in 2014. After an almost decade-long hiatus, Honda and Hatori reunited as Cibo Matto in 2011, playing a series of concerts and recording new material. Cibo Matto (EP)
''Cibo Matto'' is the debut EP by Cibo Matto released in 1995. Three tracks from this release were later included in the group's debut full-length album with slightly different arrangements (substantially in the case of "Know Your Chicken") and cleaner, better-produced vocal takes. The EP also features a cover of alternative rock band Soundgarden's 1994 song "Black Hole Sun", which Allmusic describes as "a wonderfully loopy cover... rearranged like a lounge favorite and sung in French". The final track, the instrumental "Crumbs" would later appear on the group's second EP, 1997's ''Super Relax''. In Japan the album sold 20,000 copies. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. ''Hotel Valentine'' is the third and final album by New York City-based band Cibo Matto. It was released through Sean Lennon's label Chimera Music on Valentine's Day (February 14), 2014. The album was produced by band members Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda over the course of two years. The project was initially announced in 2012 but was delayed. The official press release touts it as a concept album "with a love story and ghosts in a hotel". The announcement of its release date was accompanied by the full upload of the video for "MFN", which had previously been released as a 14-second teaser. The video is directed by Georgia and features Reggie Watts. Consequence of Sound described the track as one "that bounds manically between bass-heavy trip-hop, lush pop interludes, lo-fi funk, ndshimmery synth-pop", further naming its video as a "hyperactive collage of imagery". ''Viva! La Woman'' is the debut studio album by the band Cibo Matto, released on January 16, 1996, by Warner Bros. Records. The tracks "Birthday Cake" and "Know Your Chicken" were first released as singles in 1995. Following the release of ''Viva! La Woman'', the latter was reissued as a single in July 1996. Music videos were produced for "Know Your Chicken" and "Sugar Water", directed by Evan Bernard and Michel Gondry, respectively. Background Warner Bros.
