History This riding was created in 1947, from parts of Beauharnois—Laprairie and Châteauguay—Huntingdon ridings. It consisted of: * the county of Châteauguay, except the municipality of St-Joachim-de-Châteauguay; * the county of Huntingdon, (except the municipalities of St. Anicet and Ste. Barbe), and the town of Huntingdon; * the county of Laprairie (except the municipality of St-Jacques-le-Mineur), and the town of Laprairie; and * in the county of St. Jean, the municipalities of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, St-Bernard-de-Lacolle and the village of Lacolle. La Prairie (previously known as Laprairie) is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1896, 1968 to 1997 and again since 2015. History The riding of Laprairie was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the Parishes of Laprairie, Saint-Philippe, Saint Jacques le Mineur, Saint Isidore and Saint Constant, the Indian Lands of Sault Saint Louis, and all islands in the River Saint Lawrence close to the county. Ian Watson (politician)
Ian Watson (born 10 April 1934) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Born in Howick, Quebec, he was a lawyer by career. He first won office at Quebec's Châteauguay—Huntingdon—Laprairie riding in the 1963 federal election and was re-elected in 1965, 1968, 1972 and 1974. His riding was changed to La Prairie in 1968. In the 1979 election, Watson campaigned and won in the Châteauguay riding and was re-elected there in 1980. He was defeated in the 1984 election by Ricardo Lopez of the Progressive Conservative party. Saint-Jean is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1968. Geography The riding extends along the Richelieu River southeast of Montreal, in the Quebec region of Montérégie. It consists of the northern and western parts of the RCM of Le Haut-Richelieu. Beauharnois (also known as Beauharnois—Salaberry) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1935, from 1949 to 1953, and from 1968 to 1972. Beauharnois riding was created in the British North America Act of 1867. It was merged into Beauharnois—Laprairie riding in 1933.
