Château Tanunda is an Australian winery established in 1890 in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. The Château Tanunda is one of the most significant winery buildings in the Barossa Valley (wine), Barossa Valley built with bluestone quarried from nearby Bethany, South Australia, Bethany in the late 1890s, Glasgow cast iron, and France, French oak, and is a designated monument on the South Australian Heritage Register. History The Château Tanunda was established in 1890 after an opportunity for large wine export to Europe was identified with the drop in supply from a France hit by phylloxera. The Barossa wine industry, however, was disorganised and made up of over 560 peasant sized growers in the 1880s. A winery is a building or property that produces wine, or a business involved in the production of wine, such as a wine company. Some wine companies own many wineries. Besides wine making equipment, larger wineries may also feature warehouses, bottling lines, laboratories, and large expanses of tanks known as tank farms. Wineries may have existed as long as 8,000 years ago. Ancient history The earliest known evidence of winemaking at a relatively large scale, if not evidence of actual wineries, has been found in the Middle East. In 2011 a team of archaeologists discovered a 6000 year old wine press in a cave in the Areni region of Armenia, and identified the site as a small winery.
