''See also Château Grimaldi (other) for other Châteaux of the same name'' The Château Grimaldi at Cagnes-sur-Mer in the Departments of France, département of Alpes-Maritimes, in France, is built on the site of an earlier Fortification, fortress occupied by the Greeks and then the Ancient Rome, Romans. The present castle was built in 1309 by Rainier I of Monaco, Lord of Cagnes, Rainier Grimaldi (Lord of Cagnes and an admiral of France) - a distant ancestor of the present ruling House of Grimaldi, house of Monaco. Later it became the residence of the Governors of the province. Following the French Revolution, it was used as barracks and later as a hospital. Now owned by the city of Cagnes, it is known as ''le Château Musée Grimaldi'' (the Grimaldi Castle and Museum). Built upon a hilltop, the castle towers over the town. A machicolation (french: mâchicoulis) is a floor opening between the supporting corbels of a battlement, through which stones or other material, such as boiling water, hot sand, quicklime or boiling cooking oil, could be dropped on attackers at the base of a defensive wall. A smaller version found on smaller structures is called a box-machicolation. Terminology The structures are thought to have originated as Crusader imitations of mashrabiya. The word derives from the Old French word ''machecol'', mentioned in Medieval Latin as ''machecollum'', probably from Old French ''machier'' 'crush', 'wound' and ''col'' 'neck'. Giovanni Battista Carlone
Giovanni Battista Carlone (1603–1684) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Genoa. Biography Carlone was born and died in Genoa. He came from a family of artists: his father Taddeo, uncle, and cousins were sculptors, and his older brother Giovanni Bernardo Carlone was a painter, trained in Rome and married to the daughter of Bernardo Castello. Giovanni Bernardo, however, died at age 40. Giulio Benso
Giulio Benso (30 October 1592 – 1668) was a Genovese painter of the early Baroque. He is known as one of the followers of the style of Luca Cambiasi. Benso was born in Pieve di Teco. Initially under the patronage of Giovanni Carl Doria, he met Giulio Cesare Procaccini and was encouraged to study in the Genovese ''Accademia del Nudo''. Afterwards, he was apprenticed to Giovanni Battista Paggi. Apart from his work in Liguria, he decorated the Palazzo Grimaldi in Cagnes-sur-Mer with the ''Fall of Phaeton'' and sent works to the Abbey of Weingarten in Germany. In the 1640s, he completed his masterpiece, a fresco in the presbytery and apse of the church of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato. Phaethon
Phaethon (; grc, Φαέθων, Phaéthōn, ), also spelled Phaëthon, was the son of the Oceanid Clymene and the sun-god Helios in Greek mythology. According to most authors, Phaethon is the son of Helios, and out of desire to have his parentage confirmed, travels to the sun-god's palace in the east. There he is recognised by his father, and asks him for the privilege to drive his chariot for a single day. Despite Helios' fervent warnings and attempts to talk him out of it, counting the numerous dangers he would face in his celestial journey and reminding Phaethon that only he can control the horses, the boy is not dissuaded and does not change his mind. He is then allowed to take the chariot's reins; his ride is disastrous, as he cannot keep a firm grip on the horses. Great Hall
A great hall is the main room of a royal palace, castle or a large manor house or hall house in the Middle Ages, and continued to be built in the country houses of the 16th and early 17th centuries, although by then the family used the great chamber for eating and relaxing.
