Churchill Downs Incorporated is the parent company of Churchill Downs. The company has evolved from one racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, to a multi American-state-wide, publicly traded company with racetracks, casinos and an online wagering company among its portfolio of businesses. History Churchill Downs Incorporated began with the opening of one legendary racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1875. While traveling in England and France in 1872–1873, 26-year-old Meriwether Lewis Clark devised the idea of a Louisville Jockey Club for conducting race meets. Clark toured and visited with a number of notable racing leaders, including England's Admiral Rous and France's Vicomte Darn, vice president of the French Jockey Club. Louisville Downs
Louisville Downs was a half-mile Standardbred harness race track located in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It opened in 1966 and held over 3,400 days of harness racing until it was sold to Churchill Downs Inc. in 1991. Louisville Downs was built and managed by William H. King, a Louisville entrepreneur and promoter, who was the first to offer wagering by phone (“Call-a-Bet”) and full card simulcast wagering to television viewers. The track is now the site of Derby City Gaming, a historical racing parlor opened in 2018. History King was a well-known promoter of entertainment events in Louisville. Harlow's Casino Resort & Hotel is a casino located in Refuge, Mississippi near Greenville, and approximately east of the Mississippi River. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs Inc. Harlow's has of gaming space with slot machines, blackjack, craps, and a 7-table poker room, a 105-room hotel, a 2,500-seat entertainment center, two restaurants, and three bars. Originally the name of the casino was going to be Bali-Hai, but the owner, the late Rick Schilling, changed the name to Harlow's Casino Resort "to bring back that lavish old Hollywood style with even more grandeur to this new property". The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) is an American organization founded in 1982, whose mission is: "To save Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter." History Two years after its founding, the TRF had its first retiree. His name was Promised Road, he was then 9, an undistinguished campaigner whose career ended with a sixth-place finish in a $3,500 claiming race. There have been hundreds more like him who have come under the care of the TRF. Ron "Gibby" Gibson the trainer of Promised Road went on to teach at the facility before retiring. Fair Grounds Race Course, often known as New Orleans Fair Grounds, is a thoroughbred racetrack and racino in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is operated by Churchill Downs Louisiana Horseracing Company, LLC. As early as 1838 Bernard de Marigny, Julius C Branch and Henry Augustine Tayloe, organized races at the "Louisiana Race Course" laid out on Gentilly Road, making it the second oldest site of horseracing in America still in operation, after Freehold Raceway and before the Saratoga Race Course. Arlington International Racecourse (formerly Arlington Park, the name was Arlington Park Jockey Club from as soon as 1948 up to 1955) was a horse race track in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Horse racing in the Chicago region had been a popular sport since the early days of the city in the 1830s, and at one time Chicago had more horse racing tracks (six) than any other major metropolitan area. Hollywood Park was a thoroughbred race course located in Inglewood, California, about 3 miles (5 km) from Los Angeles International Airport and adjacent to the Forum indoor arena. In 1994, the original Hollywood Park Casino was added to the racetrack complex. Calder Casino is a casino located in Miami Gardens, Florida. It includes slots, electronic table games, and bingo.
