The Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception ( az, Müqəddəs Bakirə Məryəm kilsəsi, russian: Церковь Непорочного Зачатия Пресвятой Девы Марии) is a Roman Catholic church in Baku, Azerbaijan. The original church also named Church of the Immaculate Conception operated from 1915 to 1931, when it was ordered destroyed by the Soviet government. In 2006, a new Catholic church bearing the same name was rebuilt in a different spot of Baku. On 29 April 2007 the new church was consecrated by Apostolic Nuncio in Transcaucasia Monsignor Claudio Gugerotti. History In 1997, the Catholic community of Baku was re-established. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception (, , ) was a Roman Catholic Church built in 1912 by Polish architect Józef Płoszko in Baku, Imperial Russia (modern Azerbaijan). History Baku's Catholic community, headed by Georg Mayer (1844-1893) requested a plot of land from Baku City Duma to build a church in 1883. However the lack of funds didn't permit any construction on a sooner date. The allocated plot was later transferred to the Orthodox community where they built Alexander Nevsky Cathedral of Baku in 1898. A new plot was given to the community on 23 December 1891, but plans were delayed again due to the lack of funds. By December 1894, a parish house was built, in which the priest's apartment was located and the chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built. The Apostolic Prefecture of Azerbaijan is a Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture (missionary jurisdiction) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. It is exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See, not part of any ecclesiastical province. It has one church and four chapels situated in Baku, including its pro-cathedral the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Lech Aleksander Kaczyński (; 18 June 194910 April 2010) was a Polish politician who served as the city mayor of Warsaw from 2002 until 2005, and as President of Poland from 2005 until his death in 2010. Claudio Gugerotti (born 7 October 1955) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who was named prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches in November 2022. He previously worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, holding the position of nuncio in several eastern European countries between 2001 and 2020 and in Great Britain from 2020 to 2022. He joined the staff of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches in 1985 and was its undersecretary from 1997 to 2001. He has been an archbishop since 2001.
