Church Of St Peter, Lydford-on-Fosse
The Church of St Peter in Lydford-on-Fosse, Somerset, England was built in 1846. It is a Grade II* listed building. History The church was built in 1846, by Benjamin Ferrey, on the site of an earlier church. The previous medieval church, next to the River Brue had been flooded and was in disrepair. The parish is part of the Wheathill Priory Group of parishes making up the benefice within the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Architecture The stone building has Doulting stone dressings and a tile roof. It consists of a nave, chancel and north aisle. The west tower is supported by set-back buttresses. The tower contains a peal of six bells. The interior of the church includes a 15th century font. Some of the memorial tablets are by Reeves of Bath. Lydford-on-Fosse
Lydford-on-Fosse is a village and civil parish in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the village of West Lydford and hamlet of East Lydford. History Lydford-on-Fosse straddles the Fosse Way, an ancient Roman road which linked the cities of Lincoln and Exeter. The village takes its name from two Saxon words, Lyd ''torrent or noisy stream'' and Ford ''a passage crossing a river'', and was established before the Norman Conquest. The villages of East and West Lydford are to the east and west of the ford which was where the Fosse Way crossed the river Brue. A place where a river could be forded became a meeting place and a centre for trade and the granting of a charter for a fair and weekly market in the reign of Henry III (1216–1272) suggests that Lydford was already a place of some importance by that time. William Wailes
William Wailes (1808–1881) was the proprietor of one of England's largest and most prolific stained glass workshops. Life and career Wailes was born and grew up in Newcastle on Tyne, England's centre of domestic glass and bottle manufacturing. His first business was as a grocer and tea merchant. However, his artistic talent and practical skills led him to set up a small kiln in the backyard of his premises. He made and fired small decorative enamels which were sold in his shop. In 1830 he went to Germany to study stained glass design and production under Mayer of Munich. In 1838 he set up his own stained glass studio to design and manufacture windows and in 1841 the business began producing its own glass. In 1842 the architect Augustus Pugin approached Wailes about producing windows for him. Buttress
A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Doulting Stone
Doulting Stone Quarry () is a limestone quarry at Doulting, on the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. At present there are only three quarries quarrying Doulting stone. The largest, The Doulting Stone Quarry, was producing building stone in Roman times. In the 20th century it was operated by the Keevil family. Until 1994 it was operated by Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation (now part of Hanson plc) but was then bought out as a stand-alone business. Ham & Doulting Stone Co Ltd own the east quarry which was originally in use for centuries after which followed a period of inactivity. It was reopened 12 years ago. The quarry also offers primary and secondary cutting and profiling.
