The Church of St. Francis Xavier (St. Francis for short) is a Roman Catholic church in Benson, Minnesota, United States. The parish was founded in 1881 and its current building was designed by architect Emmanuel Louis Masqueray and constructed in 1917. St. Francis's building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 for having local significance in the themes of architecture and European ethnic heritage. It was nominated for being one of west-central Minnesota's most architecturally sophisticated churches, for its Renaissance Revival design by Masqueray, and for its association with a parish of Swift County's late-19th-century Catholic settlers. The parish is now part of St. Isidore the Farmer Area Faith Community, which also includes St. John in Appleton, St. Malachy in Clontarf, St. Bridget in De Graff, Sacred Heart in Murdock, and Visitation Oratory in Danvers. Benson, Minnesota
Benson is a city in Swift County, Minnesota, United States, along the Chippewa River. The population was 3,240 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat. History Benson was platted in 1870 when the railroad was extended to that point. As the end of the tracks, Benson became a lively trading center. Benson was the market for a 100-mile area in almost all directions. The city was named for Ben H. Benson, a Norwegian settler. Benson was incorporated as a city in 1908. The town's early history included many tragedies, such as an 1872 smallpox epidemic, an 1876 grasshopper plague, and a fire in 1880 that wiped out a whole city block. In 1869, the first general store in Benson was established. A post office has been in operation at Benson since 1870. ThBenson Public Librarywas established in 1911 after a generous donation. Emmanuel Louis Masqueray (1861–1917) was a Franco-American preeminent figure in the history of American architecture, both as a gifted designer of landmark buildings and as an influential teacher of the profession of architecture dedicated to the principles of Beaux-Arts architecture. Biography He was born in Dieppe, France, on September 10, 1861 to Charles-Emmanuel and Henriette-Marie-Louise Masqueray, née de Lamare. He was educated in Rouen and Paris. Having decided to become an architect, he studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris, as a pupil of Charles Laisné and Léon Ginain, and was awarded the Deschaumes Prize by the Institute of France.
