Church Point, Louisiana
Church Point (french: Pointe-à-l'Église) is a town in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 4,560 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Crowley Micropolitan Statistical Area. Church Point is known as the Buggy Capital of the World as it used to be host to the annual Buggy Festival which has since gone defunct. History In the late 18th century, French settlers from Nova Scotia (Acadie) Canada, created clearings by burning the underbrush, leaving what they called a ''brûlé'', or "burn", much as the Native Americans in the area had created a "burn" to promote new grass to attract bison and other grazing and browsing animals. One of these clearings was created on a slough off Bayou Mermentau, near where the slough came to a point. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) is the agency that regulates and promotes the interscholastic athletic competitions of all high schools in the state of Louisiana. Organization LHSAA was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in October 1920. The LHSAA's main office was in Hammond from 1953 until 1972, when it returned to Baton Rouge. The LHSAA is governed by an Executive Director and an executive committee, with representatives from each of the association's class divisions. Livonia High School (LHS) is a public high school in Livonia, Louisiana, United States. It was established in 1915 and is part of the Pointe Coupee Parish School Board. History The present Livonia High School was established in Livonia in 1915. The following year, 1916, this school was combined to also include all of the students from Valverda and Dreyfus schools. The present Livonia High building was built in 1936. It was originally a two-story brick building. The second floor was lost to a fire in 1971. During the 1990/1991 school year, Livonia High was scheduled to be closed down as part of a parish-wide school consolidation plan that resulted in the establishment of Pointe Coupee Central High School. Rayne High School is located in Rayne, Louisiana, United States. The school is a part of the Acadia Parish School Board. Its mascot is the Mighty Wolves, and it has the largest enrollment of any school in the parish.
