The Church of St Anselm and St Cecilia is a Roman Catholic church at 310 Kingsway, Holborn, London. It was built in about 1909, designed by Frederick Walters to replace the Sardinian Embassy Chapel which was demolished in order to make way for Kingsway. The A4200 is a major thoroughfare in central London. It runs between the A4 at Aldwych, to the A400 Hampstead Road/ Camden High Street, at Mornington Crescent tube station. Frederick Walters
Frederick Arthur Walters (1849–1931) was a Scottish architect working in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, notable for his Roman Catholic churches. Life Walters was born on 5 February 1849 at 6 South Terrace, Brompton, London, the son of the architect Frederick Page Walters—with whom he served as an articled clerk for three years. After working in the office of George Goldie for nine years, he formed his own architectural practice in 1878, taking his son, John Edward Walters, into partnership in 1924. Sardinian Embassy Chapel
The Sardinian Embassy Chapel was an important Catholic church and embassy chapel attached to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sardinia in the Lincoln's Inn area of London. It was demolished in 1909. History The chapel was in existence several years before it became an embassy chapel. During the reign of James II, 54 Lincoln's Inn Fields was occupied by priests of the Franciscan Order, who built a chapel behind it. Following the flight of James II in 1688, the Franciscans withdrew and the chapel was destroyed by the mob. By 1700 the restored buildings were occupied by the Portuguese embassy, which probably moved into them soon after 1688. By 1715 a Sicilian embassy chapel is recorded there. In 1720 the Duke of Savoy exchanged his kingdom of Sicily with the Emperor for the kingdom of Sardinia. Stanley Kerr Bate
Stanley Chave Kerr Bate (born 1906) is a British architect, the son of Commander Francis William Bate RNR, Surveyor Marine Dept, Board of Trade, and his wife Helen Maria Talbot Bate. Kerr Bate began his career with the inheritance of the architectural practice of Frederick Walters. In 1953, a south aisle designed by Kerr Bate was added to the Church of St Anselm and St Cecilia, and the facade rebuilt. Walters originally had designed the church, which was built in 1909.
