Church History Department
The Church History Department (CHD) manages the historical and publishing activities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). This includes the Church History Museum, Church Historian’s Press, and various research and collection projects. LeGrand R. Curtis, Jr., an LDS Church general authority, has been the Church Historian and Recorder (CHR) since August 1, 2019. History The position of CHR is based on revelations Joseph Smith said he received, which are included in the Doctrine and Covenants, calling for keeping records and preparing a church history. Oliver Cowdery, the first in this position, originally recorded meeting minutes, patriarchal blessings, membership information, priesthood ordinations, and a narrative church history. Mission President
Mission president is a priesthood leadership position in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). A mission president presides over a geographic area known as a mission and the missionaries serving in the mission. Depending on the particular mission, a mission president may also be the presiding priesthood leader of some or all Latter-day Saints within the geographic boundaries of the mission. Mission presidents are ordained high priests of the church. Selection Mission presidents are assigned to a mission by the leadership of the LDS Church and typically discover the location a few months before their departure. Jennifer Reeder (historian)
Jennifer Reeder is a historian and writer and is currently the nineteenth-century women’s history specialist at the Church History Department (CHD) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Reeder obtained degrees from Brigham Young University, Arizona State University, and New York University. She has worked at the New York Historical Society, the Brooklyn Museum Libraries and Archives, the American Jewish Historical Society, the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York Archive, and the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Church History. She has a PhD in American history from George Mason University, specializing in women’s history. Kate Holbrook
Kate Holbrook (January 13, 1972 – August 20, 2022) was an American historian and writer. She worked as the managing historian of women's history in the Church History Department (CHD) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Early life Holbrook was born in Santa Barbara, California, on January 13, 1972, to Kathleen Stewart and Robert Holbrook. Her father left the family six weeks after she was born, and she was raised by her mother and grandmother, Belle Fillmore Stewart. Her mother later moved to Utah and Holbrook attended schools in Provo. After a stint as an LDS missionary in Samara, Russia, she studied at Brigham Young University. Holbrook then obtained a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, before being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in religious studies from Boston University.
