Chuck Mau
Chuck Mau (January 10, 1907 - September 11, 1990) was a Chinese-American politician and jurist. Personal life Chuck Mau was born in Chinatown, Honolulu as the son of Chinese immigrants. His mother died of influenza in 1918, and his father operated a small business. He received a scholarship to go to Mills School (now Mid-Pacific Institute) and graduated with a law degree from the University of Colorado. In 1950, he received the University of Colorado Alumni Award. Career Chuck Mau was a founder of the modern Democratic Party of Hawaii and an early advocate of Hawaiian statehood. Working as a law clerk to justices of the Supreme Court of Hawaii from 1933 to 1936, Mau quickly was appointed to Deputy to the Attorney General of Hawaii, the first Asian-American to serve in the role. The Chinatown Historic District is a neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaii, known for its Chinese American community. It is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States. Ernest Isao Murai
Ernest Isao Murai (September 12, 1900 – 1981) has been called one of the "founding fathers" of the modern-day Hawaii Democratic Party. He was also the US Director of Customs in Hawaii, a National Democratic Party Committeeman and the first Asian-American to serve on the Honolulu Police Commission. Background Murai was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, the son of Japanese immigrants who originally migrated to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations. His stevedore father sent him to California at the age of 16 for the increased educational opportunities and to remove him from a rough neighborhood. Murai attended the University of California at Berkeley and worked his way through dental school at the University of California San Francisco. He returned to Hawaii in 1926 to practice dentistry. The 1948 Democratic National Convention was held at Philadelphia Convention Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from July 12 to July 14, 1948, and resulted in the nominations of President Harry S. Truman for a full term and Senator Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky for vice president in the 1948 presidential election. One of the decisive factors in convening both major party conventions in Philadelphia that year was that the eastern Pennsylvania area was part of the newly developing broadcast television market. In 1947, TV stations in New York City, Washington and Philadelphia were connected by a coaxial cable. The Hawaii Democratic Revolution of 1954 is a popular term for the territorial elections of 1954 in which the long dominance of the Hawaii Republican Party in the legislature came to an abrupt end, replaced by the Democratic Party of Hawaii which has remained dominant since. The shift was preceded by general strikes, protests, and other acts of civil disobedience that took place in the Hawaiian Archipelago. The strikes by the Isles' labor workers demanded similar pay and benefits to their Mainland counterparts. The strikes also crippled the power of the sugarcane plantations and the Big Five Oligopoly over their workers. Prelude Hawaii had a dominant-party system since the 1887 revolution. The 1887 Bayonet Constitution took most of the power away from the monarchy and allowed the Republican Party to dominate the legislature.
