Chromaprint
AcoustID is a webservice for the identification of music recordings based on the Chromaprint acoustic fingerprint algorithm. It can identify entire songs but not short snippets. By 2017, the free service had 34 million "fingerprints" in store and every day acquired between 15 and 20 thousand new entries and answered around five million search queries. AcoustID is integrated into the audio file metadata editors MusicBrainz Picard, Picard, Jaikoz and Puddletag, for example. Chromaprint In October 2009 MusicIP was acquired by AmpliFIND. Some time after the acquisition, the MusicDNS service began having intermittent problems. Since the future of the free identification service was uncertain, a replacement for it was sought. The Chromaprint acoustic fingerprinting algorithm, the basis for AcoustID identification service, was started in February 2010 by a long-time MusicBrainz contributor Lukáš Lalinský. MusicBrainz is a MetaBrainz project that aims to create a collaborative music database that is similar to the freedb project. MusicBrainz was founded in response to the restrictions placed on the Compact Disc Database (CDDB), a database for software applications to look up audio CD information on the Internet. MusicBrainz has expanded its goals to reach beyond a CD metadata (this is information about the performers, artists, songwriters, etc.) storehouse to become a structured online database for music. MusicBrainz captures information about artists, their recorded works, and the relationships between them. Recorded works entries capture at a minimum the album title, track titles, and the length of each track. These entries are maintained by volunteer editors who follow community written style guidelines. An acoustic fingerprint is a condensed digital summary, a fingerprint, deterministically generated from an audio signal, that can be used to identify an audio sample or quickly locate similar items in an audio database. Practical uses of acoustic fingerprinting include identifying songs, melodies, tunes, or advertisements; sound effect library management; and video file identification. Media identification using acoustic fingerprints can be used to monitor the use of specific musical works and performances on radio broadcast, records, CDs, streaming media and peer-to-peer networks. MusicBrainz Picard
MusicBrainz Picard is a free and open-source software application for identifying, tagging, and organising digital audio recordings. It was developed by the MetaBrainz Foundation, a non-profit company that also operates the MusicBrainz database. Picard identifies audio files and Compact Discs by comparing either their metadata or their acoustic fingerprints with records in the database. Audio file metadata (or "tags") are a means for storing information about a recording in the file. When Picard identifies an audio file, it can add new information to it, such as the recording artist, the album title, the record label, and the date of release. In some cases, it can also add more detailed information, such as lists of performers and their instruments. Jaikoz
Jaikoz is a Java program used for editing and mass tagging music file tags. Jaikoz generates acoustic fingerprints from music files using the AcoustId service, it can then look up the metadata from MusicBrainz using the AcoustId, additionally it can match based on metadata to MusicBrainz or Discogs. Matching is first applied at album level, falling back to track level where a match at album level could not be made. This allows Jaikoz to automatically fix most of a users song collection. Jaikoz uses a relatively unusual spreadsheet metaphor for both viewing and editing data, and allows editing of over fifty fields using this spreadsheet interface, the underlying jaudiotagger tag library is released under LGPL and is used by various Java applications. Puddletag
Puddletag is a graphical audio file metadata editor ("tagger") for Unix-like operating systems. It is free and open-source software subject to the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3. In most major desktop Linux distributions, it is available from standard package repositories. Under Arch Linux(-based ones) it can be obtained from community repositories. The user interface is modeled after the popular Windows freeware ''Mp3tag''. It uses a spreadsheet-like layout so that all the tags a user may want to edit by hand are visible and easily editable. All the other audio taggers available for Linux take a different approach to user interface design. The interface elements can be freely arranged. One of their customers was MetaBrainz Foundation, a non-profit company that used MusicDNS in their MusicBrainz and MusicBrainz Picard software products. Even so, MusicIP dissolved in 2008. The company's CEO, Andrew Stess, bought the rights to MusicDNS, renamed the software to ''AmpliFIND'', and started a new company called AmpliFIND Music Services. Pitch Class
In music, a pitch class (p.c. or pc) is a set of all pitches that are a whole number of octaves apart; for example, the pitch class C consists of the Cs in all octaves. "The pitch class C stands for all possible Cs, in whatever octave position."
