Christopher Scott Murphy (born August 3, 1973) is an American lawyer, author, and politician serving as the junior United States senator from Connecticut since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the United States House of Representatives, representing from 2007 to 2013. Before being elected to Congress, Murphy was a member of both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly, serving two terms each in the Connecticut House of Representatives (1999–2003) and the Connecticut Senate (2003–2007). Murphy ran for the U.S. Senate in 2012 after long-time incumbent Joe Lieberman announced in January 2011 that he would retire from politics rather than seeking a fifth term in office. He defeated former Connecticut secretary of state Susan Bysiewicz in the Democratic primary, and subsequently defeated Republican candidate Linda McMahon for the open seat in the general election. Christopher Mark "CM" Murphy (9 November 1954 – 16 January 2021) was an Australian music and multimedia entrepreneur. He was the band manager for INXS (late 1979 to June 1995, December 2008 to November 2012) and Models (from late 1984 to mid-1987). He died on 16 January 2021, aged 66, following a battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Early life Christopher Mark Murphy was born on 9 November 1954 and grew up in Darlinghurst. His father, Mark Murphy, had run a theatrical booking agency, Mark Murphy & Associates, in Wollongong since 1960. A year after Mark died in 1969, Murphy, at the age of 16, joined his mother in running the agency but shifted its focus to rock music acts. Chris Murphy (born November 7, 1968) is a member of the Canadian rock band Sloan. Early life Murphy was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His family later moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where his father obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He later moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he attended Halifax West High School and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Musical career Murphy originally formed Sloan with Jay Ferguson. Murphy is the band's primary bassist, occasionally switching to drums or guitar, and is one of the band's two main singers; he sings lead on about 40 percent of the band's songs and backup harmony vocals on most of the others. Christopher Bryce Murphy (born 25 March 1976, Perth) is an Australian male singer-songwriter who placed fourth in ''Australian Idol 2006''. Starting piano lessons at age 11, he added guitar to his list of skills and began playing in his band, 'Murphy's Lore' at the age of 16. A member of the Western Australian band ''Murphy's Lore'', he has led the group since its formation in 1993. During that period the band released three independent albums: ''People in Grass Houses'' (1995), ''Best Laid Plans'' (1999), and ''The Universe Conspires'' (2002). Murphy re-joined the band in 2014 where he is currently a full-time member.
