Christophe Butkens
Christophe Butkens (1590–1650) was a Cistercian abbot from Antwerp, a historian and a genealogist who developed a new hatching system. Hatching systems Butkens developed his own hatching system but he himself used it in an inconsistent way, leading to misunderstandings. It quickly passed out of use in favour of other systems. His hatching method was published in the book ''Annales genealogiques de la maison de Lynden'' (Antwerp, 1626), which has been seen as flagrant in falsifying the van Lynden genealogy, as shown by Baron van Linden in 1891. However, his later work is seen as authentic. Thomas De Rouck
Thomas de Rouck (baptized January 21, 1592, Bergen op Zoom - September 5, 1660, Bergen op Zoom) was a steward and later the mayor of his native town Bergen op Zoom. De Rouck developed a late hatching system (1645), but failed to make a serious cut. The engravings, according to his 1673 work, were possibly made by his relatives. The portrait of the vicar Lambertus de Rycke (†1658) seen in the book was engraved by W llemde Rouck. F. J. van Ettro maintained, he was familiar with the hatching system of Zangrius. However, it seems more evident that even Butkens might have known Zangrius’ system despite his hatching table being radically different from that of Zangrius because he also applied the same oval escutcheon in his hatching table similar to what Zangrius did in his system. Jan Baptist Zangrius
Jan Baptist Zangrius (died 1606 in Leuven) was a Flemish engraver, publisher, typographer and bookseller. His name is mostly spelled as Johannes Baptista Zangrius, but is also known as de Sanger, de Zangre, Zangre, and Zangré. Biographical data He was active in Leuven between 1595 and 1606 and by all probability he was a relative of the publishers and typographists Petrus (1559–1623) and Philippus Zangrius (1585–1610). In 1601, Zangrius engraved the portraits of Infante Isabella, her husband archduke Albrecht Habsburg, governor of the Low Countries, and Justus Lipsius. These engravings were also part of his 1602 (or 1605) work titled ''Album Amicorum'' containing 67 engravings, namely 46 womanly costumes and armorial cartouches, 9 small and 11 bigger armorial engravings. Hatching System
Hatching (sometimes called ''hachure'', from the French word) is a conventional system for monochrome denotation of heraldic armory, whereby the tinctures (colours) are represented by dots and lines. This technique is employed in cases where colours, for either aesthetic, practical or economic reasons are not reproduced – e.g. on surfaces such as woodcuts or engravings, seals and coins. Several systems of hatchings were developed during the Renaissance as an alternative to tricking, the earlier method of indicating heraldic tinctures by use of written abbreviations. The present day hatching system was developed during the 1630s by Silvester Petra Sancta and Marcus Vulson de la Colombière. Abraham Van Diepenbeeck
Abraham van Diepenbeeck (9 May 1596 (baptised) – between May and September 1675) was Dutch painter of the Flemish School. Biography Van Diepenbeeck was baptised in 's-Hertogenbosch. After having received a classical education, he became a pupil and assistant of Peter Paul Rubens. He handled mythological and historical subjects, as well as portraits. He went to Antwerp about 1629 and made his first successes in painting on glass, among his productions being windows in the cathedral there representing the "Acts of Mercy". Similar work at the church of the Dominicans shows scenes from the "Life of Saint Paul". Van Diepenbeek was admitted to the guild of painters in 1638, and became director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in 1641. It was after a visit to Italy that the artist began to paint chiefly in oil and to illustrate.
