Christmas Hurdle (Ireland)
The Christmas Hurdle is Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Ireland. It is run at Leopardstown Racecourse in December, over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres) and during its running there are 12 flights of hurdles to be jumped. The race is one of the feature races of Leopardstown's Christmas Festival. Prior to 2013 it carried Grade 2 status. The 2019 race was run as the Frank Ward Memorial Hurdle. The 2022 renewal was ran as the Jack De Bromhead Christmas Hurdle. National Hunt
In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Barry Geraghty
Barry Geraghty (born 16 September 1979) is a retired Irish jockey. He is the second most successful jockey of all time at the Cheltenham Festival. Geraghty rode his first winner in January 1997 and three years later he became the Irish Champion jump jockey for the first time. His first win in England was the 1998 Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter on Miss Orchestra for trainer Jessica Harrington. He rode his first Cheltenham winner on the Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer in the 2002 Arkle Chase. He won the Grand National in 2003 on Monty's Pass. Also that year he won five races at the Cheltenham Festival, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Moscow Flyer and was voted Irish sports personality of the year. Klassical Dream
Klassical Dream (foaled 30 March 2014) is a French thoroughbred racehorse competing in National Hunt racing. Career Bred in France, Klassical Dream started his career hurdling for owners Ecurie Zingaro. Following seven runs, primarily at Auteuil, Klassical Dream had picked up just one victory inn the Prix de Gastines at Sablé-sur-Sarthe. He was sold in 2018 and training switched to Willie Mullins in Ireland. His first race for new owner Mrs Joanne Coleman came at Leopardstown and ended with victory. Klassical Dream would go on to win three Grade 1 races in a row in 2019 the Chanelle Pharma Novice Hurdle, the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham and the Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown a month later. Flooring Porter
Flooring Porter (foaled 12 May 2015) is an Irish racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. He was highly tried in his first season as a Novice hurdler, running nine times and winning two minor races. In the following season he made dramatic improvement, winning two Handicap hurdles before stepping up to Grade 1 class to win the Christmas Hurdle and the Stayers' Hurdle. Background Flooring Porter is a bay with no white markings horse bred in Ireland by Sean Murphy who is based at the Ryehill Stables in County Galway. Murphy had also bred the horse's dam and grand-dam. As a foal in December 2015 the colt was consigned to the Goffs National Hunt sale and was bought for €6,000 by Richard Rohan. Davy Russell
Davy Russell (born 27 June 1979) is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey. He was Irish jump racing Champion Jockey three times, and won the Grand National (twice), the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. Childhood and amateur career Russell was born David Niall Russell, the second youngest of six children, and raised on the farm of his parents Jerry and Phyllis Russell in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland . Bryan Cooper (born 7 August 1992) is an Irish National Hunt jockey and is the son of trainer Tom Cooper and his mother is Geraldine Cooper née O'Brien. Paul Townend
Paul Townend (born 15 September 1990) is an Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. Townend comes from Midleton in County Cork and rides primarily for the stable of Irish trainer Willie Mullins. Townend has worked for Mullins since beginning his career as an apprentice flat racing jockey. He was Irish jump racing Champion Jockey for the 2010–11, 2018–19, 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons. Andrew McNamara (jockey)
Andrew McNamara is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey. McNamara had his first winning ride on La Captive in a bumper at Wexford in July 2002. He turned professional at the beginning of the 2004-05 season. In 2006 he won the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Newmill. He also won the 2010 Irish Grand National on Bluesea Cracker. On 14 August 2015 he won on his last ride, which was on The Right Honourable at Tramore. Adrian Maguire, born 29 April 1971 in Kilmessan, County Meath, Ireland, is a racehorse trainer and former jockey.
