Allen Bert Christman (May 31, 1915 – January 23, 1942) was an American cartoonist and naval aviator. He is best known as artist of the newspaper comic strip '' Scorchy Smith'', about a pilot-adventurer in the inter-war years. He was also credited with co-creating the original, Wesley Dodds version of the DC Comics character the Sandman. Amateur career Christman attended Oneonta High School in Oneonta, New York and was named '' The Daily Stars player of the year in 1992 and 1993. Christman played college baseball at Siena College from 1994 to 1996. He set a school record for career strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings. Originally brought up a Catholic, Christman turned to Scientology after being introduced to the book '' Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health'' authored by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard while staying with her parents in Chicago. She identified with concepts described in the book including the idea of attaining the Scientology state of clear, and became a member of the organization in 1969. She hitchhiked from Chicago to Los Angeles, in order to begin the process of studying Scientology, and initially felt that it helped improve her life. Career Youth and college Cristman graduated from Mills Godwin High School in Richmond, Virginia, where as a senior in 2003 he helped seal a perfect 22–0–0 record for the team on way to an AAA state championship and No. 1 national ranking. He played college soccer at the University of Virginia, where he scored 34 career goals and accumulated 15 assists. During his college years Cristman also played for the Richmond Strikers and Richmond Kickers Future in the USL Premier Development League. Professional Cristman was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by New England Revolution and signed a developmental contract with the club.
