"Christis Kirk on the Green" is an anonymous Middle Scots poem in 22 stanzas, now believed to have been written around the year 1500, giving a comic account of a brawl at a country fair. It was for many years mistakenly attributed either to James I of Scotland or to James V of Scotland. It gave rise to a whole tradition of humorous poems on similar subjects by Scottish poets down the centuries, including Allan Ramsay and Robert Burns, and is still one of the most frequently published works in Middle Scots. "Christis Kirk on the Green" has been called one of the finest performances in 15th-century British poetry. Synopsis The scene opens at Christ's Kirk where a dance is in full swing on the village green. While Tom Lutar plays the music and sings, the young women flirt with their suitors. ''The Tale of Ralph the Collier'', also known as ''The Tale of Ralph Collier'' and ''The Taill of Rauf Coilyear'', is a Scottish dialect Middle English poem composed in the late fifteenth century. It constituted a revival of Middle English alliterative verse, wherein the first and middle parts of each verse begin with the same sound. Synopsis The story concerns King Charlemagne, who has gotten lost and detached from his retinue in a storm. He is forced to take refuge in the home of a collier named "Rauf." While Rauf is more or less hospitable, he does not realize his guest is the king, and so treats him somewhat roughly. Upon departing the next day, Charlemagne tells Rauf to come to the court in Paris so he can sell his goods at a very lucrative price. When he gets home, the king orders his best knight, Sir Roland, to scan the countryside and tell anyone on the road to come straight to Charlemagne. William Dunbar
William Dunbar (born 1459 or 1460 – died by 1530) was a Scottish makar, or court poet, active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. He was closely associated with the court of King James IV and produced a large body of work in Scots distinguished by its great variation in themes and literary styles. He was probably a native of East Lothian, as assumed from a satirical reference in ''The Flyting of Dumbar and Kennedie''. W. Aureation ("to make golden", from la, aureus) is a device in arts of rhetoric that involves the "gilding" (or supposed heightening) of diction in one language by the introduction of terms from another, typically a classical language considered to be more prestigious. Aureation commonly involves other mannered rhetorical features in diction; for example circumlocution, which bears a relation to more native literary devices such as the kenning. It can be seen as analogous to Gothic schools of ornamentation in carving, painting, or ceremonial armoury. St Salvator's College was a college of the University of St Andrews in St Andrews, Scotland. Founded in 1450, it is the oldest of the university's colleges. John Callander
John Callander (1722–1789) of Craigforth in Stirlingshire was a Scottish antiquary and plagiarist. Life He was the son of James Callander, and Katherine Mackenzie, daughter of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie of Cromarty. He passed advocate at the Scottish bar, but never obtained a practice. The preface by James Maidment to ''Letters from Thomas Percy, D.D., afterwards Bishop of Dromore, John Callander of Craigforth, Esq., and others, to George Paton'', which appeared at Edinburgh in 1830, indicates that in his latter years Callendar was reclusive, and a religious melancholic. He died, at an old age, at Craigforth on 14 September 1789.
