John Griffiths (born 19 December 1956) is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician and the former Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development in the Senedd. Griffiths has represented the constituency of Newport East since the Senedd (then as the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999. Education Griffiths studied law as a mature student at the University of Wales. Professional career Before his election to the Senedd, he was a practising solicitor (criminal law, personal injury and general civil litigation). 1999 National Assembly For Wales Election
The first National Assembly for Wales elections were held on 6 May 1999. The overall turnout of voters was 46.3%. Although Welsh Labour were the biggest party, they did not gain enough seats to form a majority government and instead entered into coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The election was marked by the historically high level of support for Plaid Cymru, who won their highest share of the vote in any Wales-wide election and, as of 2021, their highest number of seats in an Assembly election to date. The party won considerable support in traditionally safe Labour areas such as the South Wales Valleys, winning Rhondda and Islwyn and narrowly failing to win a number of other seats. Ynysybwl
Ynysybwl ( cy, Ynys-y-bŵl ) is a village in Cwm Clydach in Wales. It is situated in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, roughly north-north-west of Cardiff, north of Pontypridd and south of Merthyr Tydfil, and forms part of the community of Ynysybwl and Coed-y-Cwm. Cwm Clydach is flanked by the Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. The market town of Pontypridd lies to the south at the meeting point of the three valleys; and to the north lies the large Llanwynno forestry. Before the local government reforms of 1996 Ynysybwl was in the Cynon Valley district of Morgannwg Ganol, and the area is historically a part of Glamorgan (Morgannwg). Name There is uncertainty over the meaning of the name of the village. ''Ynys'' means 'island' or 'river meadow' in Welsh and probably refers to such a meadow on the banks of the Clydach stream.
