Christiana, Delaware
Christiana is an unincorporated community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States, located on the Christina River, 12 miles southwest of Wilmington. It is home to the Christiana Hospital and the Christiana Mall and is the location of the northern terminus of Delaware Route 1 at an interchange with Interstate 95. Despite sharing a name with Christiana Hundred, the community of Christiana is located in White Clay Creek Hundred. History It is named after the Christina River, which is in turn named after Christina, Queen of Sweden who oversaw the founding of New Sweden in 1638. The Christiana Historic District, Charles Allen House, John Lewden House, Old Fort Church, Public School No. 111-C, and James Stewart Jr. House and George Hillis Sr. House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Christiana Hundred
Christiana Hundred is an unincorporated subdivision of New Castle County, Delaware. Hundreds were once used as a basis for representation in the Delaware General Assembly, and while their names still appear on all real estate transactions, they presently have no meaningful use or purpose except as a geographical point of reference. Boundaries and formation Christiana Hundred is that portion of New Castle County that lies north of the Christina River and White Clay Creek, west of the Brandywine Creek and east of the Red Clay Creek, excepting that portion in the southeast included in Wilmington Hundred. Annie Ryder Gracey
Annie Ryder Gracey (, Ryder; pen name, Mrs. J. T. Gracey; November 4, 1836 - February 17, 1908) was an American author and missionary of the long nineteenth century. She wrote two books based on her travels, ''Eminent Missionary Women'' and ''Woman's Medical Work in Mission Fields''. The history of the literature produced by the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was closely linked with Gracey, who served as chairman of the committee on literature, and created missionary literature for the Society. Early life and education Annie Ryder was born in Christiana, Delaware, November 4, 1836. She attended the Wilmington Female College, from which she graduated at the age of sixteen. Rebecca Lee Crumpler
Rebecca Lee Crumpler, born Rebecca Davis, (February 8, 1831March 9, 1895), was an American physician, nurse and author. After studying at the New England Female Medical College, in 1864 she became the first African-American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States. Crumpler was one of the first female physician authors in the nineteenth century. In 1883, she published ''A Book of Medical Discourses''. The book has two parts that cover the prevention and cure of infantile bowel complaints, and the life and growth of human beings. Dedicated to nurses and mothers, it focuses on maternal and pediatric medical care and was among the first publications written by an African American about medicine. Crumpler graduated from medical college at a time when very few African Americans were allowed to attend medical college or publish books. Old Fort Church is an historic African-American Methodist church located on Old Baltimore Pike in Christiana, New Castle County, Delaware. The church was originally built on Schoolbell Road (in Christiana Hundred) near Christiana in 1850. In 1897, it was dismantled and reconstructed on its present site. New Sweden
