Christa Sammler
Christa Sammler (born 23 December 1932) is a German sculptor. Life Christa Sammler was born in Breslau (as Wrocław was known at that time). Between 1948 and 1951 she received drawing lessons from Alfred Herzog in Bautzen. 1951 was the year in which she passed her school final exam (''"Abitur"'') which opened the way for a university-level education. She studied between 1951 and 1956 at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts where she was taught by Walter Arnold. However, it was probably more important in defining her own approach that between 1956 and 1958 she was a "Master student" (''"Meisterschülerin"'') with Gustav Seitz at the East German Academy of Arts. She has worked in Berlin as a freelance artist since 1958. Alongside her work as a professional sculptor Sammler has made it a priority to focus on rescuing and preserving historical art works and buildings. Walter Momper
Walter Momper (born 21 February 1945) is a German politician and former Governing Mayor of Berlin (West Berlin 1989–1990, reunited Berlin 1990–1991). Whilst Governing Mayor, he served as President of the Bundesrat in 1989/90. He was at the opening of the Brandenburg Gate on 22 December 1989 and, on 3 October 1990, became the first mayor of a reunited Berlin. He was born in Sulingen (near Bremen), today Lower Saxony, and is a member of the SPD (Social Democrats). Momper went to school in Bremen. After leaving school in 1964 he began studying political science, history and economics at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Munich and at the Freie Universität Berlin, which he left in 1969 as a graduate in political science. Käthe Kollwitz Prize
The Käthe Kollwitz Prize (german: Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis) is a German art award named after artist Käthe Kollwitz. Established in 1960 by the then-Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic (nowadays the Academy of Arts, Berlin), the prize is awarded annually by a jury whose members are newly chosen each year to a visual artist living and working in Germany who is honored either for a single work or their complete body of work. Since 1992, the prize money (12,000 euros as of 2009) has been co-funded by the Kreissparkasse Cologne, the owner of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Cologne. The Academy organises a parallel exhibition, accompanied by a catalog, for the laureate. The Art Prize of the German Democratic Republic (German: ''Kunstpreis der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik'') was an East German state award bestowed on individuals for contributions in various fields of art. History The Art Prize was annually awarded in recognition of "outstanding creative and interpretive achievements" in visual arts, applied arts, cinema, television, radio and entertainment. It could be conferred to individual recipients or in collective, to groups of no more than six people. The recipients were awarded a silver-coated metal medal, 20 millimeter in diameter, with the inscription ''Kunstpreis''. Beside it, a single grantee would also be entitled to a sum of 6,000 East German Marks, while a collective would get a sum as high as 20,000. The Art Prize was the country's highest honor for artists, and was outranked only by the National Prize of East Germany. Will Lammert Prize
The Will Lammert Prize (german: Will-Lammert-Preis) was an East German art award named after the sculptor Will Lammert. Between 1962 and 1992, it was awarded at irregular intervals to young sculptors by the (East) German Academy of Arts. There were 13 laureates in total. The prize, which was donated by Lammert's widow in 1957, was awarded for the first time on 5 January 1962, to Werner Stötzer. This made the Will Lammert Prize the first privately sponsored award in East Germany. According to its provisions, only sculptors under the age of 30 were eligible for the prize.
