Christ Church (Lancaster County, Virginia)
Christ Church is a historic Episcopal church in Lancaster County, Virginia, north of Irvington. Built in 1732-35, it is notable for its unique Georgian design, and is one of the best-preserved colonial churches in the southern United States. The church is the only colonial Virginia church that still has its original high-backed pews and one of two that has maintained its original three-tiered pulpit. History The first church erected at the site was a wooden building, the construction of which was funded by powerful landowner John Carter in 1670. Carter died before the construction was completed, but was buried on the church grounds alongside four of his five wives. John Carter's son Robert, a wealthy vestryman and planter, decided that the parish deserved a more substantial place of worship and, in 1730, funded and supervised the construction of a brick building on the approximate foundations of the old wooden church. Weems, Virginia
Founded in 1886, Weems is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lancaster County in the U. S. state of Virginia. It was first drawn as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. Christ Church, physically located in Weems, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Corotoman was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The community is in southern Lancaster County, at the end of Virginia State Route 222 (Weems Road) on the north bank of the tidal Rappahannock River, where it is joined by Carter Creek. Via VA 222 it is southwest of Kilmarnock, the largest town in the county. Grace Church (Kilmarnock, Virginia)
Grace Church of Kilmarnock, Lancaster County, Virginia, is the largest rural Episcopal church in the Commonwealth. History The original brick building, the town's first church and now a chapel attached to the current church, was consecrated by assistant bishop John Johns in 1852. At that and some other times, Grace Church shared a single rector with historic Christ Church (founded 1670), St. Mary's Church Whitechapel (founded 1669), and/or Trinity Church in Lancaster. The current sanctuary was dedicated by Bishop Goodwin in 1959, and an arcade connects it with the old church, now a chapel. In 1988, Bishop Peter James Lee consecrated the enlarged Grace House. Further expansion occurred in 2002. In 2017, the church building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
