Christopher Wilson (composer)
Christopher Wilson (7 October 1874 - 17 February 1919) was a British composer and conductor best known for his theatre music. Wilson was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire, into a musical family. His mother and grandmother were both accomplished pianists, and his uncle, Francis William Davenport, was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He showed early musical promise as a composer and performer (piano, organ, violin, viola). In 1889 he won the first choral scholarship at Derby School. In 1892 he became a student at the Royal Academy of Music under Alexander Mackenzie, where he was awarded the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1895. There followed a period of study abroad, with Franz Wüllner in Cologne, Heinrich von Herzogenberg in Berlin and Charles-Marie Widor in Paris. Christopher Wilson (merchant)
Christopher Wilson (1731–1804) was an English merchant and banker in Kendal. Life He was the eldest son of Thomas Wilson of Natland, a hosier, and Ellen Burrough or Burrow. He inherited land and property from his father. Going into business himself as a hosier, he started to invest in linsey manufacture by 1766. From beginnings buying fleeces to dye, he built up a merchant connection in textiles, and gunpowder, though partnerships, sales travellers, and exports. Wilson built Blindbeck House in Kendal, and his family moved there in 1785. Wilson founded the Kendal Bank (Maude, Wilson & Crewdson), with Joseph Maude and Thomas Crewdson, on 1 January 1788 (Crewdson was a cousin to Wilson). This bank opened in Farrers House, Stramongate (moving to Highgate in 1792) simultaneously with John Wakefield's bank; the two banks merged in 1840. Christopher Wilson (1765–1845) was an English businessman, banker and political activist of anti-reform views. Early life He was the eldest son of Christopher Wilson and his wife Margaret Parke. Christopher Wilson (c.1714 – 18 April 1792) was an English churchman who served as Bishop of Bristol. Biography According to ''Alumni Cantabrigienses'', Christopher Wilson was the son of Richard Wilson, Recorder of Leeds. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School, and was admitted as a pensioner at St Catharine's College, Cambridge on 23 September 1732, and matriculated in 1733. He graduated B.A. 1737, M.A. 1740, D.D. 1753. Wilson served as a Fellow of St Catharine's 1737–1745, and as Proctor 1742–43. After ordination as a deacon in 1740 and as a priest in 1742, Wilson was appointed Vicar of Coton, Cambridgeshire in 1742, and Prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral in 1745. He served as Rector of Barnes from 1768 until his death, and as Bishop of Bristol from 1783 until his death. Christopher Wilson (born 1951) is a British lutenist who has performed widely and recorded several albums. Career Wilson studied the lute at the Royal College of Music in London with Diana Poulton. He has performed widely in Great Britain and abroad, as a soloist and with other prominent musicians and ensembles, such as Michael Chance, Fretwork and The Hilliard Ensemble.
