Christopher John Mitchell is an Australian journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of ''The Australian'' from 2002 to 2015. Journalism career In 1973 Mitchell began his career as a 17-year-old cadet on the former afternoon Brisbane tabloid, ''The Telegraph''. After working at the ''Townsville Bulletin'', ''The Daily Telegraph'' and ''The Australian Financial Review'', he joined ''The Australian'' in 1984. He turned down a dentistry scholarship to pursue a career in newspapers. In 1992, aged 35, Mitchell was appointed editor of ''The Australian''. In 1995 he became editor-in-chief of Queensland Newspapers. In the role, he had editorial oversight of ''The Cairns Post'', ''Townsville Bulletin'' and ''Gold Coast Bulletin''. In 2002 he returned to ''The Australian'' as editor-in-chief. Mitchell retired from the position in December 2015. Christoper Grant Mitchell (1 January 1947 – 26 November 2022) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and Carlton in the VFL. Playing with the Old Geelong Grammarians, he was awarded the Best & Fairest Award in 1965, the same year he entered Trinity College (University of Melbourne) where he continued on the field, playing in Trinity's 1st XVIII football team. An athletic, strong marking ruckman, Mitchell was handy around goals and kicked 23 of them in his debut season for Geelong in 1967. He would play in the 1967 VFL Grand Final, sharing ruck duties with Graham Farmer. In 1969 he left Victoria and signed up with WANFL club East Perth where he spent two years before returning to Geelong. Christopher Philip Mitchell (21 July 1988 – 7 May 2016) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a defender or midfielder. Mitchell began his senior career at Scottish Premier League club Falkirk who also loaned him to Ayr United. He then had a season in England with Bradford City before joining Queen of the South in 2012. In his first season at Queens he won the Scottish Challenge Cup and Scottish Football League Second Division. At the end of that season he was named in the division's PFA Scotland Team of the Year. Mitchell had a brief spell at Clyde in 2015–16. Complications from spinal surgery ended his professional career at Queen of the South, and he left Clyde to establish a new career. Mitchell suffered depression due to his change of career and killed himself at a level crossing at the age of 27.
