Chris Leitch (politician)
Christopher John Leitch ( – 20 January 2023) was a New Zealand politician. He was the leader of the Social Credit Party from 2018 until his death in 2023. Biography Early life and career Leitch was interested in soccer and cricket as a child and at age 11 also became interested in dancing (also an interest of his parents) and danced first socially and then competitively. He won the Auckland region youth age division competitions and later was the winner of multiple national competitions between the age of 15 and 17. By the time he was 18 he began teaching dancing as well while still learning himself, being tutored by Maurice Taylor, one of New Zealand's leading dance examiners and fellow of the New Zealand Federal Association of Dance Teachers. Social Credit Party (New Zealand)
The New Zealand Social Credit Party (sometimes called "Socred") is a political party which served as the country's Third party (politics), third party from the 1950s through into the 1980s. The party held a number of seats in the New Zealand House of Representatives, although never more than two at a time. It renamed itself the New Zealand Democratic Party from 1985 to 2018, and was for a time part of the Alliance (New Zealand political party), Alliance from 1991 to 2002. It returned to the Social Credit name in 2018. The party is based on the ideas of social credit, an economic theory established by Major C. H. Douglas. 2022 Wellington Protests
The 2022 Wellington protest was an anti-vaccine, anti-mandate occupation of the grounds of Parliament House and Molesworth Street in Central Wellington during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It began in February 2022 and lasted just over three weeks. The protestors were a mixed group, but the majority were opposed to the COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates in New Zealand, claiming they were fighting for the freedom of all New Zealanders. The numbers were swelled by violent online chatter on social media sites, including a Trump-aligned alternative media outlet, which lead the event to be hijacked by groups with more extremist right wing views. Stefan Lipa
Stefan Lipa (born 1953) (LL.B (''Auck'') 1975) is a former New Zealand politician. He was president of the Social Credit Party (originally the Social Credit Political League; in 1985 its name was changed to the Democratic Party) from 1979 to 1987 and he was a leading advocate of proportional representation in New Zealand. Early life Lipa spent his childhood in Auckland and was educated at St Peter's College where one of the influential teachers was Tom Weal, deputy leader of the Social Credit Political League 1970–1972.
