Chris Kiernan
Christopher Kiernan (23 March 1878 – 2 December 1925) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the early years of the Victorian Football League (VFL) and first-class cricketer. Kiernan was a Fitzroy local and played for the Maroons in the inaugural VFL season, topping their goalkicking in their first two years, and again in 1900. He played in Fitzroy's 1898 premiership side as well as in two losing grand finals. Additionally, Kiernan was selected in Fitzroy's 1899 Grand Final side but failed to arrive at the ground on time and missed out on playing in a second premiership.Atkinson, p. 75. Fitzroy, Victoria
Fitzroy is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Fitzroy recorded a population of 10,431 at the 2021 census. Planned as Melbourne's first suburb in 1839, it later became one of the city's first areas to gain municipal status, in 1858. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Fitzroy Football Club (VFA) Players
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Below is a chronological list of cricketers to have represented Victoria at first-class level.
