Chris Hampton
Chris Hampton is an American college football coach who currently serves as the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Oregon. He previously was the defensive coordinator at Tulane University. Playing career Hampton was a safety for South Carolina from 2004 to 2007 where he started for two seasons. He won the Harold White Award for the highest GPA on the team. Coaching career Hampton began his coaching career in 2008 as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State. In 2011 he became the defensive backs coach at Central Arkansas before taking the same job the following year at McNeese State. In 2016 he was hired by Louisiana Monroe as the defensive backs coach leaving for the same job at Tulane before coaching a game. In 2020 he was hired by Duke to be their defensive backs coach. In 2021 he returned to Tulane as the defensive coordinator with head coach Willie Fritz stating that he was the only coach considered. A defensive coordinator is a coach responsible for a gridiron football (American football) team's defense. Generally, the defensive coordinator, the offensive coordinator and the special teams coordinator represent the second level of a team's coaching structure, with the head coach being the first level. The primary role of the defensive coordinator is managing the roster of defensive players, overseeing the assistant coaches, developing the defensive game plan, and calling plays for the defense during the game. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team's wide receivers, and the Safety (gridiron football position), safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense.
