Chris Duffy (footballer, Born 1918)
Christopher Duffy (21 October 1918 – 20 February 1978) was a Scottish footballer who played as a left winger in the English Football League. He scored the only goal for Charlton Athletic in extra time in the 1947 FA Cup Final, against Burnley. Duffy, a fast and intelligent winger, first came to Charlton Athletic as a war time guest player. A modest fee of £330 persuaded his home club, Leith Athletic to relinquish his services when he was demobilised from the armed forces. His appearance against Burnley was his third Cup Final. Methil, Fife
Methil (Scottish Gaelic: Meadhchill) is an eastern coastal town in Scotland. It was first recorded as "Methkil" in 1207, and belonged to the Bishop of St Andrews. Two Bronze Age cemeteries have been discovered which date the settlement as over 8,000 years old. Famous for its High Street having the most pubs per mile in Scotland, it was part of its own barony in 1614 and also part of the former burgh of Buckhaven and Methil. This burgh existed between 1891 and 1975 (following the reorganisation of local government). It is situated within a continuous urban area described as Levenmouth. Methil lies geographically between Largo Bay to the east and Wemyss Bay to the west. Previously an industrial maritime powerhouse of the region and once Scotland's greatest coal port, it is now redirecting itself towards a green energy future. 1944 Football League War Cup South Final
The 1944 Football League War Cup South Final was the final of the southern section of Football League War Cup, an unofficial cup competition held in England during the Second World War as a replacement for the suspended FA Cup. The match took place at Wembley Stadium on 15 April 1944 and was won by Charlton Athletic, who beat Chelsea 3–1. Charlton later contested a play-off against the winners of the equivalent North final, Aston Villa. Match summary Chelsea took an early lead thanks to a penalty from Joe Payne. Consett
Consett is a town in County Durham, England, about south-west of Newcastle upon Tyne. It had a population of 27,394 in 2001 and an estimate of 25,812 in 2019. History Consett sits high on the edge of the Pennines. Its' name originates in the Old English ''Cunecsheafod'' ("Cunec's headland"), first recorded in the 13th century. In 1841, it was a village community of only 145, but it was about to become a boom town: below the ground were coking coal and blackband iron ore, and nearby was limestone. These three ingredients were needed for blast furnaces to produce iron and steel. The town is perched on the steep eastern bank of the River Derwent and owes its origins to industrial development arising from lead mining in the area, together with the development of the steel industry in the Derwent Valley, which is said to have been initiated by immigrant German cutlers and sword-makers from Solingen, who settled in the village of Shotley Bridge during the 17th century.
