Chow Lien-hwa
Chow Lien-hwa ( zh, t=周聯華, s=周联华, first=t; 7 March 1920 – 6 August 2016) was a Chinese Baptist minister, missionary, and theologian. He was a recognized Christian leader in Taiwan, serving as chaplain to Taiwan's former presidents Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Ching-kuo, and Lee Teng-hui. Life Chow was born in Shanghai to a Taoist family. He attended the University of Shanghai, but left before graduating in business management due to the Japanese occupation of the city during World War II. Chow settled in Chongqing and enrolled at Chongqing University, where he converted to Baptist Christianity. He returned to Shanghai to complete his degree before going to the United States in 1949 to study theology, completing his BDiv (1951) and PhD (1954) from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Chinese Baptist Convention
The Chinese Baptist Convention (CBC; ) is a Baptist Christian denomination in Taiwan and the territories administered by the Republic of China. It is affiliated with the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Taipei. History In October 1936, a resolution was passed during the centenary celebrations of the Baptist mission in China to engage in the extension of work to the frontier regions, which then included Taiwan which was a part of Empire of Japan, Japan. With the Retrocession Day, retrocession of Taiwan to China following the surrender of Japan in 1945, plans were made to expand the mission to Taiwan. A visit was made by a Shanghai missionary, Lila Florence Watson, in February 1948. Chongqing ( or ; ; Sichuanese pronunciation: , Standard Mandarin pronunciation: ), alternately romanized as Chungking (), is a municipality in Southwest China. The official abbreviation of the city, "" (), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. This abbreviation is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds into the Yangtze River. Administratively, it is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China (the other three are Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), and the only such municipality located deep inland.
