Chorlton High School
Chorlton High School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, England. It has around 1500 pupils and 300 in each year. History Grammar school There was a "Chorlton High School" in the 19th century run by Dr William Ballantyne Hodgson, this Chorlton High School (for Boys) was founded in September 1924 with 110 boys due to the growing need to educate older local boys. The first headmaster was A. F. Chappell, appointed in 1925. During Second World War it was twice evacuated to Fleetwood, owing to the Blitz; school records for the period during the war are sketchy, as the boys were moved around multiple times. The first headmaster retired in 1951 and was succeeded by Mr Merriman a year later. In 1952 it became a grammar school as pupil numbers started increasing again. The third and final headmaster was C. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. David John Threlfall (born 12 October 1953) is an English stage, film and television actor and director. He is best known for playing Frank Gallagher in Channel 4's series '' Shameless''. He has also directed several episodes of the show. In April 2014, he portrayed comedian Tommy Cooper in a television film entitled '' Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This''. Jack Eccles (trade Unionist)
Jack Fleming Eccles (9 February 1922 – January 2010) was a British trade unionist. Eccles was born in Heaton Moor and grew up in Chorlton, then studied at the University of Manchester. During World War II, he served with the 14th Army in Burma. In 1948, he took employment as an organiser with the National Union of General and Municipal Workers. His family had a long history in the union, with his grandfather Fleming Eccles and father Tom Eccles both having played leading roles. Eccles also served as a Labour Party member of Manchester City Council. The ''Who's Who in New Zealand'', originally called the ''Who's Who in New Zealand and the Western Pacific'', is a collection of biographies that was first published in 1908, and the latest version is from 1991. History The first edition was edited by the journalist and historian Guy Scholefield in association with Emil Schwabe. This was the first of a series of publications containing biographies compiled and edited by Scholefield, and it formed the basis for his later book ''Dictionary of New Zealand Biography'', published in two volumes in 1940. The ''Who's Who'' contained, according to Scholefield, those who had done "some definite service over and above what the individual was paid to do". There was no attempt made by Scholefield to make the ''Who's Who'' representative of New Zealand society. Scholefield edited the first five editions of this book. Frank Cohen
Frank Cohen (born 15 October 1943) is a British businessman and art collector. He is frequently referred to as "the Saatchi of the North", in reference to the more famous art dealer Charles Saatchi. He was born and raised in Manchester, where he worked in market stalls before building up the ‘Home Improvement Company’ and then ‘GlynWebb Home Improvement Stores’, a large chain of Do It Yourself (DIY) stores in the north of the United Kingdom. Cohen began collecting art in the 1970s and, upon selling his business in 1997, it became his full-time occupation. He also co-founded the Dairy Art Centre with Nicolai Frahm in 2013, a contemporary art gallery which closed in late 2014. Michael John Turner CBE (born 5 August 1948) is the former chief executive officer (CEO) of the aerospace and defence company BAE Systems, and current chairman of Babcock International and prior to the hostile takeover by Melrose was chairman of GKN plc. Keith Newton (footballer)
Keith Robert Newton (23 June 1941 – 16 June 1998) was an English international footballer who played as a defender in The Football League in the 1960s and 1970s. Newton was born in Manchester. He started his career with Blackburn Rovers and first played a League game in the 1960–61 season. Newton went on to play over 300 games for the club. He transferred to Everton in December 1969 and made 12 appearances for them in the latter half of the 1969–70 season, in which Everton won the Football League First Division. Newton moved to Burnley for the 1972–73 season, making his league debut on 12 August 1972 against Carlisle United.
