Chongqing Library
The Chongqing Library (), initially called the National Roosevelt Library, is a large-scale comprehensive public library, located in Shapingba District, Chongqing City, China. The library was established in 1947, and was one of only five national libraries in China at the time. It is one of the two earliest United Nations document depositories in China. Shapingba District
Shapingba () is a district of Chongqing, People's Republic of China, formerly known as Shaci District () during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Sino-Japanese War. It is one of the central parts of Chongqing and covers around 396 square kilometers, with 13 jiedao, subdistricts and 11 towns. Chongqing ( or ; ; Sichuanese pronunciation: , Standard Mandarin pronunciation: ), alternately romanized as Chungking (), is a municipality in Southwest China. The official abbreviation of the city, "" (), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. The first libraries in China came into being during the time of the Shang dynasty (the sixteenth to eleventh centuries B.C.) as intellectuals known as the Shi (historians) and Wu (diviners) emerged from manual labor to special occupations for the creation and spread of culture. Among the documents that these occupations managed were "the country's statute books, genealogies of imperial kinsmen, issued notices and orders, and recorded important events and natural phenomena.
