Chittagong Cantonment
Chattogram Cantonment is situated near Bayezid Bostami of Chattogram, Bangladesh. It is the headquarters of 24th infantry division. History An Indian army tank captured by the East Bengal Regiment (based in Chattogram cantonment) near Lahore in the 1965 Indo-Pak war is displayed in the cantonment. On 30 May 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in Chattogram city by officers based in Chattogram Cantonment. The base commander General Abul Manzur was also accused of involvement in the coup. He himself was killed on 2 June 1981. Chittagong ( /ˈtʃɪt əˌɡɒŋ/ ''chit-uh-gong''; ctg, চিটাং; bn, চিটাগং), officially Chattogram ( bn, চট্টগ্রাম), is the second-largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and third largest city in Bengal region. It is the administrative seat of the eponymous division and district. It hosts the busiest seaport on the Bay of Bengal. Savar Cantonment
Savar Cantonment ( bn, সাভার সেনানিবাস) is a cantonment located in Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The 9th infantry division of Bangladesh Army is garrisoned there. Corps of Military Police Centre & School (CMPC&S) and the Savar Golf Club (SGC) are also located in the cantonment. History Before 1971, the area was known as 'Ansar Camp' and during Bangladesh Liberation War the camp was used for Razakar by Pakistani Army. After the independence it was main training center for Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini which would be absorbed into Bangladesh Army in 1976. Since 1976 it is given to Bangladesh Army to use as their cantonment. Soldiers stationed in Savar cantonment supported the president during the 1976 Bangladesh coup d'état attempt and helped prevent the coup from being successful. Cumilla Cantonment ( bn, কুমিল্লা সেনানিবাস) is a cantonment located near Mainamati, Cumilla city in Bangladesh. The personnel of Bangladesh Army with local civilian inhabit here. The 33rd Infantry Division HQ is also located here. It has an area of 3000 acres. History During the Second World War, a jungle warfare school was set up at Comilla by the 14th Indian Infantry Division, after the mid-1942 Allied retreat from Burma. The school emphasized techniques in six areas key to successful fighting in jungle terrain: outflanking, being outflanked, ambushing and other minor tactics, the myth of the impenetrable jungle, health, and fitness. Army Medical College, Chattogram (AMCC) is military medical college established in 2014. It is located in Chattogram Cantonment, Bangladesh. It is affiliated with Bangladesh University of Professionals. The college started its academic journey on 11 January 2015 with 50 students and 13 faculty members. Chittagong Cantonment Public College (CCPC) is a higher secondary educational institution in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It was established in 1961, and administered by the Bangladesh Army. East Bengal Regiment
The East Bengal Regiment ( bn, ইস্ট বেঙ্গল রেজিমেন্ট) is an infantry regiment ( regimental system type) and the largest military formation of the Bangladesh Army. History The East Bengal Regiment was formed on 15 February 1948, following the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947. As the infantry of the newly formed Pakistan Army was made up exclusively of men from West Pakistan, it was seen as a necessity to raise a regiment in East Pakistan. Chittagong District, renamed the Chattogram District, is a district located in the south-eastern region of Bangladesh. It is a part of the Chattogram Division. The port city of Chattogram, which is the second largest city in Bangladesh, is located within this district. History Because of the natural harbour, Chattogram had been an important location for trade, drawing Arab traders as early as the 9th century CE. The region fell under the rule of kings from Arakan in the 16th and 17th centuries, but later, the Mughal Army under Shaista Khan conquered Chattogram. During the 17th century, the region also faced a lot of attacks by Portuguese pirates. The Mughals established Chattogram as a district in 1666. Abul Manzoor
Muhammed Abul Manzur (24 February 1940 – 1 June 1981) was a Bangladeshi military officer who commanded the Bangladesh Forces operations in Sector 8 during the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971. He was allegedly involved in the assassination of the then-President of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman. The erstwhile Chief of Army Staff and alleged mastermind of Rahman's assassination, Hussein Muhammad Ershad, had put a standing shoot-to-kill order on Manzur's life—he was killed shortly after being captured at the border. About a year later, Ershad initiated a bloodless coup d'état and took over the Central Government, holding power until 1990. Manzur had been awarded the Bir Uttam by the Bangladeshi government for his actions in the Bangladesh Liberation War.
