Chits are a type of wargame counter that are generally not directly representational but used for the following purposes: * ''Tracking'', being placed on a numeric runner to indicate turn status, as in some rule variants for ''Squad Leader''. In '' Axis & Allies Revised Edition'', chits can be used to track air unit movement, indicating how many spaces fighters or bombers can move after combat. * ''Randomization'' or ''chit drawing'', as in '' Air Baron'', where at the start of each round, one color-coded chit per player is placed in a cup. The chits are drawn sequentially to determine the current order of play. Chit drawing is also used in ''Air Baron'' to pay income. Every purchased airline spoke, plus all hubs, have a unique chit placed in a cup. At the start of every turn, the player randomly draws two chits, paying the owner appropriately. Wargaming
A wargame is a strategy game in which two or more players command opposing armed forces in a realistic simulation of an armed conflict. Wargaming may be played for recreation, to train military officers in the art of strategic thinking, or to study the nature of potential conflicts. Many wargames recreate specific historic battles, and can cover either whole wars, or any campaigns, battles, or lower-level engagements within them. Many simulate land combat, but there are wargames for naval and air combat as well. Generally, activities where the participants actually perform mock combat actions (e.g. friendly warships firing dummy rounds at each other) are not considered wargames. Counter (board Wargames)
A counter is usually a small cardboard square moved around on the map of a board wargame to represent relevant information or determine certain things. The first wargame based on cardboard counters was ''War Tactics or Can Great Britain Be Invaded?'' invented by Arthur Renals of Leicester in 1911.Christopher Lewin, ''War Games and their History'', Chapter 8, Fonthill Media, Stroud (GB) 2012, The first wargame bringing counters to a mass-market was Tactics (game), ''Tactics'', invented by Charles S. Squad Leader
''Squad Leader'' is a tactical level board war game originally published by Avalon Hill in 1977. It was designed by John Hill and simulates on infantry combat in Europe during World War II. One of the most complex war games of its time, ''Squad Leader'' is the natural extension of the trend towards greater realism (and hence complexity) initiated by several earlier games, including Avalon Hill's own ''PanzerBlitz'' and '' Panzer Leader''. Those two earlier games were slightly larger in scope, with counters representing platoons and map hexes measuring 250 metres across, compared to Squad Leader's 40 meter hexes and squad sized units. The original ''Squad Leader'' was produced in time to debut at Origins 1977. (The original print run of 2,500 copies had purple boxes which have become collectors' items.)
