Chiroderma Improvisum
The Guadeloupe big-eyed bat (''Chiroderma improvisum'') is a species of bat in the family Phyllostomidae. It is found in Guadeloupe and Montserrat. It is threatened by habitat loss mostly because of Hurricane Hugo, which destroyed 90% of its population in 1989. The species may be locally extinct in some areas of Guadeloupe. Taxonomy and etymology The Guadeloupe big-eyed bat was described in 1976. The holotype was collected in July 1974 in Baie-Mahault commune of Basse-Terre Island. Its species name is of Latin origin and means "unforeseen" or "unexpected." Baker and Genoways chose this species name because they "did not expect to find ''Chiroderma'' on Guadeloupe because the nearest known representative from the Caribbean occurs on Trinidad and Tobago, 550 kilometers to the south." Baker and Genoways, when initially describing the species, speculated that it might be closely related to the Brazilian big-eyed bat, and that the current two species were relicts of a single, once-w ...

Brazilian Big-eyed Bat
The Brazilian big-eyed bat (''Chiroderma doriae'') is a species of phyllostomid bat from South America. The scientific name honours Italian naturalist Giacomo Doria. Description The Brazilian big-eyed bat is small, with a total length of , and weighing . Like other big-eyed bats, it has a short snout, with a large cleft in the skull above the nose. The presence of this cleft gives the misleading impression that the skull lacks any nasal bones; these bones are fused with the surrounding bones, and simply do not join up in the midline, as they do in other bats. The Brazilian big-eyed bat has greyish brown fur over much of the body with greyish or dark brown underparts. There is a distinct white stripe down the middle of the back, and smaller white stripes above the eyes, stretching from the ears to the nose. The ears are rounded and relatively short, while the nose-leaf is pointed, with a rounded base. Compared with most of its close relatives, the Brazilian big-eyed bat has few ...

Chiroderma Vizottoi
''Chiroderma vizottoi'' is a species of frugivorous bat found in the northeast of Brazil. Taxonomy The species was described by Valdir Antonio Taddei and B. K. Lim in a study published in 2010, identifying specimens previously deposited at a research institution that were recognised as the sixth extant species of the genus. The collection date of the holotype is unknown, paratypes were collected in 1977 and 2000. The authors distinguished the new taxon by morphological characteristics, cranial features and dentition, and by speciation that emerged through geographical isolation. The specific epithet commemorates the works of Luis Dino Vizotto's contributions toward an understanding of chiropteran systematics. The spelling of the epithet, as ''vizzotoi'', was erroneously published by the IUCN. Description A mid-sized species of ''Chiroderma'', a genus of Phyllostomidae known as the big-eyed bats, most closely resembling the species ''Chiroderma doriae'' found across easte ...
