Chinta (film)
(Malay: "Love") is a 1948 Singaporean Malay-language black-and-white romantic drama film directed by B. S. Rajhans and produced by Malay Film Productions. It was released on 31 October 1948. ''Chinta'' was the first Malayan film released after the declaration of the Malayan Emergency, and also marks the first screen appearance of P. Ramlee. Ramlee also performed as a playback singer in the film, providing vocals in five songs for the lead actor Roomai Noor. It is the oldest surviving film of Malayan cinema. Plot A boat is caught in a huge tempest and sinks. Only King Kanchi (S. Roomai Noor) survives. A few fishermen find him on the shore and rescue him. Zubir Said
Zubir Said (22 July 1907 – 16 November 1987) was a Singaporean composer most notable for composing the national anthem of his country, "Majulah Singapura" – "Onward Singapore". A self-taught musician, Zubir also worked as a score arranger and songwriter for Cathay Organisation's Keris Film Productions for 12 years, composing numerous songs for the company's Malay Singaporean films. He is believed to have written up to 1,500 songs, with less than 10% of them ever recorded.; See also . The cinema of Malaysia consists of feature films produced in Malaysia, shot in the languages Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, various indigenous languages, and English. Malaysia produces about 60 feature films annually, and between 300–400 television dramas and serials a year apart from the in-house productions by the individual television stations. The country also holds its own annual national level film awards, known as the Malaysia Film Festival. The Malay Film Productions Ltd., also known as the Shaw Studio, is a former film studio located on Jalan Ampas in Balestier, Singapore. The studio operated from 1947 to 1969 with more than 150 movies produced, and was a major contributor to the Golden Age of Malay Cinema. Many of the films are critically acclaimed, a significant number of which involved P. Ramlee as actor, director, writer or composer. History Origin The Shaw brothers had established a chain of cinemas in Malaya and Singapore by the 1930s, and were interested in producing films for the local market.
