The People's Liberation Army Support Base in Djibouti is a military base operated by China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), located in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa. It is the PLAN's first overseas military base and was built at a cost of . The facility is expected to significantly increase China's power projection in the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean, as well as the PLAN's blue water capabilities. The People's Liberation Army Navy has used the base to conduct anti-piracy operations off of the coast of Djibouti and around the Horn of Africa. It is also expected to take part in activities such as intelligence collection, non-combat evacuation operations, peacekeeping operations support and counterterrorism. Balbala
Balbala ( ar, بلبالا) is a southern suburb of Djibouti City, located west of the river Ambouli. The name is from the "Flashing" (on Somali bal-bal be derived) from the nearby lighthouse. The suburb has formed since 1966 when access to the city was restricted. At first a shanty town, it is now a suburb with schools and a hospital, and a population estimated at 80,000. History After riots in 1966 a checkpoint was erected in front of the capital of the former French colony to discourage "subversive elements" at the entrance to the city. Upstream of this checkpoint developed a settlement of migrants from other parts of the country, an informal cattle market and a caravan station.
