Chinandega Department
Chinandega () is a department in Nicaragua, located on the border with Honduras. It covers an area of 4,822 km2 and has a population of 441,897 (2021 estimate). The capital is the city of Chinandega. Largely agricultural, it produces rum from sugar cane; other products are bananas, peanuts, shrimp and salt. The port of Corinto, in Chinandega, is the most important in Western Nicaragua. Chinandega () is a city and the departmental seat of Chinandega department in Nicaragua. It is also the administrative centre of the surrounding municipality of the same name. It is Nicaragua's 2nd most important city (economy) and 6th largest city, with a population of 114,417 (2021 estimate), and a total of 137,170 in the municipality. It is located about northwest of Managua and about southwest of El Guasaule, on the border with Honduras. Chinandega is situated about from the Pacific Ocean. San Juan de Cinco Pinos, colloquially known as Cinco Pinos, is a town and a municipality in the north of the Chinandega Department in Nicaragua, situated between San Pedro del Norte and Santo Tomás del Norte. History The town was founded in 1879 as a result of the migration of residents from neighboring Honduras. Prior to that time, there was a small village called ''Villa Salvadorita'', 2 km west of the current location of Cinco Pinos. In the early 1950s, with the development of cotton cultivation, the town was renamed to San Juan de Cinco Pinos. El Viejo is a city and a municipality in the Chinandega department of Nicaragua. El Viejo is a small city near the city of Chinandega, noted for its particular gastronomic specialties, which include ''rosquillas'' ( a type of doughnut), ''cajetas'' (a type of dulce de leche), ''bollitos de leche'' (a kind of scone), and a fruit particular to the region called the toncua, which is related to the papaya and is eaten with honey. El Realejo is a municipality in the Chinandega department of Nicaragua. History The town of El Realejo was constructed in 1532, during the first years of Spanish colonization.
