China Records
China Records was a record label founded 1 October 1984 by Derek Green (music), Derek Green. Its top-selling artists were Art of Noise, Morcheeba and the The Levellers (band), Levellers. In 1986 and 1987, China Records releases were manufactured and marketed worldwide by Chrysalis Records, and then by Polydor Records in 1988 through 1990. From 1991 the labels UK releases were made and distributed by Pinnacle Records, with material being licensed to various other labels for international release. In February 1992 Derek Green quit the BPI over their stance on the independent chart, whilst the label distribution went major in 1997 in music, 1997 when it was acquired by Warner Music Group. With this deal, China was distributed through Discovery Records in the US, and is now being distributed through Sire Records since Discovery folded. Pinnacle Records
Pinnacle Entertainment was an entertainment group based in the United Kingdom spanning many divisions, but primarily known as one of the UK's leading independent record label Record distributor, distributors. History In 1996, Windsong/Pinnacle was purchased by the Zomba Label Group, Zomba Group. When Zomba was subsequently purchased by Bertelsmann Music Group, BMG in 2002, Windsong/Pinnacle was moved under Bertelsmann, Bertelsmann's group Arvato, Arvato AG. In January 2008, Windsong completed a Management buyout, buyout from Arvato, gaining independent ownership again. However, in the midst of an Financial crisis of 2007–2010, economic crisis, the company was forced to go into Administration (law), administration, effective December 3, 2008. The Fountainhead (band)
The Fountainhead was an Irish rock band founded by Steve Belton and Pat O'Donnell in 1982. In 1984, the duo won a music contest with a prize of 20 hours of recording time at Windmill Lane Studios. They used this time to record their first single, "Rhythm Method", which they released independently in 1984. After the song became popular on Irish radio, they were offered a contract with China Records. The band's name comes from the novel of the same name by the Objectivist author and philosopher, Ayn Rand. China Records released the band's first studio album, ''The Burning Touch'', in 1986. For touring, Belton and O'Donnell brought in drummer Peter McKinney, bass player Willie Demange, and keyboardist Phil Rennick. The expanded lineup debuted on 17 May 1986 at the Self Aid benefit concert. Their performance of the song "Feel It Now" appeared on the follow-up ''Live for Ireland'' charity album. Zion Train
Zion Train are a British dub ensemble that formed in Oxford, 1988. They have consistently released music and toured from 1992 to present day. Their mix of reggae and dance music was a notable innovation in the early 1990s. History Co-founder Neil Perch is an autodidact, he taught himself music production and composition after completing a master's degree in biochemistry in the mid eighties. Initially formed in Oxford as a sound system in 1988 by Neil Perch and Ben Hamilton, Colin Cod and Dave Tench joined in 1990 upon relocation to London. The line-up was added to with vocalist Molara in 1992. Their initial releases were the 7" singles "Power One" and "Power Two", which became hits on the dub scene in the early 1990s. Ugly As Sin
Ugly As Sin were an English post-punk/pop rock band from London formed in 1989. History The band Ugly As Sin was formed by singer-songwriter Ian Walker and was signed to China Records. As a second founding member Boris Pikula (ex-Andi Sexgang, Huckleberry Finn) joined in July 1989, followed by Fiona Lawrence in August 1989. As this trio, the band was to be commercially marketed by the record company, thus the album title ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly''. In mid-1989, the recording of the debut album started, being engineered and produced on 16-track by Paul Mex at Mex One Recordings in Watford. It was released in the beginning of 1990. Claudius Afolabi Siffre (born 25 June 1945) is a British singer, songwriter and poet. Siffre released six albums between 1970 and 1975, and four between 1988 and 1998. His best known compositions include " It Must Be Love" which reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart in 1971 (a song later covered by the ska band Madness), "Crying Laughing Loving Lying", and " (Something Inside) So Strong"—an anti-apartheid song inspired by a television documentary in which white soldiers in South Africa were filmed shooting at black civilians in the street—which hit number 4 on the UK charts. The latter song won Siffre the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and it has been used in Amnesty International campaigns. Rialto (band)
Rialto were an English rock band formed in London in 1997. They released their self-titled debut album in 1998, followed by their second and final album, ''Night on Earth'', in 2001. Their single "Untouchable" reached the top 20 in the UK Singles Chart. In the summer of 1998, Rialto became the first ever UK chart band to release a single exclusively through the internet. Despite finding favour with music critics, with ''Melody Maker'' anticipating "a fairytale future of Oasis-like proportions", the band were famously dropped by their label East West, a Warner Music Group imprint, a month before the release of their heavily promoted eponymous debut album, denting the group's chances of major commercial success. Nasty Suicide
Nasty Suicide (born Jan-Markus Stenfors on 27 February 1963) is a Finnish musician. He is most famous for being one of the founding members of Hanoi Rocks, the group's rhythm guitarist between 1979 and 1985. Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish rock band that combined elements of punk, glam rock, rock and roll, and blues. Before his tenure in Hanoi Rocks, Suicide played guitar in a Finnish punk band called Briard in the late 1970s. Suicide replaced Andy McCoy in Briard after McCoy joined Pelle Miljoona Oy. After the breakup of Hanoi Rocks in 1985, he and his former bandmate Andy McCoy recorded an acoustic album under the name The Suicide Twins which was released in 1986 and was titled '' Silver Missiles and Nightingales''. Loud (band)
Loud were a hard rock band with alternative rock, gothic rock and heavy metal influences, formed in Bradford, England in 1989. The band was founded by guitarist Chris McLaughlin, following his stint in New Model Army and former Excalibur (P.A.D.D. Hardware) Bassist Martin Hawthorn, second guitarist Colin Clarkson and drummer Ricky Howard (formerly of Happiness AD) completed the line-up.
