China Art Objects Galleries
China Art Objects Galleries is a contemporary art gallery co-founded by a group of artists in Los Angeles in 1999. Founder Steve Hanson moved the gallery to Mérida, Mexico in 2021. History Named after a box sign attached to the unit, China Art Objects was founded in 1999 by a group of friends that included Peter Kim, Amy Yao, Mark Heffernan, Steve Hanson, and Giovanni Intra. The gallery evolved out of the critical theory program at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where they had been students. The gallery was first located in Los Angeles' Chinatown neighborhood on Chung King Road, and the gallery was instrumental in bringing about a renaissance in Los Angeles art and in particular the Chinatown district. Jon Pylypchuk
Jon Pylypchuk (born 1972) is a Canadian painter and sculptor, living and working in Los Angeles. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Pylypchuk studied in 1996 at the Yale University Summer School of Music and Art, New Haven, earned a BFA with Honors in 1997 at the University of Manitoba, and an MFA in 2001 at the University of California, Los Angeles. His work includes sculptures, paintings and drawings, and he has presented his art under the pseudonym Rudy Bust. He was a member of the artist collective known as The Royal Art Lodge (1996–2008) founded by Michael Dumontier, Adrian Williams, Neil Farber, Marcel Dzama, and Drue Langlois, though Pylypchuk was only active in 1996 through 1998. Kill Rock Stars
Kill Rock Stars is an independent record label founded in 1991 by Slim Moon and Tinuviel Sampson, and based in both Olympia, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. The label has released a variety of work in different genres, but was originally known for its commitment to underground punk rock bands and the Olympia area music scene. History Sampson and Moon initially started the label because, in Moon's words, "I just wanted to put out my friends' records because nobody was putting out my friends' records. And to put out spoken word 7-inch records." KRS-101 (the label's first release) was in fact a split 7-inch spoken-word record with Kathleen Hanna and Slim Moon; other "Wordcore" releases followed. Mia Doi Todd (born June 30, 1975) is an American singer-songwriter. Stephen Prina (born 1954) is an American artist. His work has been categorized as post-conceptualism. Prina is a professor at the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies (VES) at Harvard University. Early life and education Born in 1954, in Galesburg, Illinois, Prina received a BFA from Northern Illinois University in 1977 and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1980. Julie Becker (1972–2016) was an interdisciplinary American artist. She earned her BFA and MFA at CalArts in Los Angeles. Morgan Fisher (artist)
Morgan Hall Fisher (born 1942, in Washington, D.C.) is an American experimental filmmaker and artist best known for his structuralist and minimalist films referencing the material processes of celluloid film and the means and methods of producing moving images, including the camera, the director and crew, and the editing process. Since the 1990s, Fisher has also been producing paintings and installation works. His work has been included in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions, 1985, 2004 an2014 He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987. Jennifer Moon (artist)
Jennifer Chihae Moon (born 1973) is a conceptual artist and life-artist living in Los Angeles. She was born in Lafayette, Indiana and completed her bachelor's degree at UCLA and master's degree at Art Center College of Design. After college Moon had her first solo art exhibition in 1996 and her work was shown regularly up to 2002. After receiving a graduate degree from Art Center, Moon suffered from drug abuse and was sentenced to 18 months in the Valley State Prison for Women in 2008, following several attempted robberies. Angus Fairhurst (4 October 1966 – 29 March 2008) was an English artist working in installation, photography and video. He was one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Life and work Angus Fairhurst was born in Pembury, Kent. Having attended The Judd School between 1978 and 1985, he studied at Canterbury Art College 1985–1986, and graduated in 1989 in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, where he was in the same year as Damien Hirst.
