Chin Sophonpanich
Chin Sophonpanich ( th, ชิน โสภณพนิช; ; 10 November 1910 – 4 January 1988) was a Thai entrepreneur who founded Bangkok Bank and Bangkok Insurance. Biography Chin was born in Wat Sai quarter in Thonburi Province (currently Chom Thong District) to a Thai Chinese family. His father was a Chinese immigrant from Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong, China who worked at a sawmill, while his mother was a local-born Thai Chinese. At the age of five years, Chin was sent back to China for education, and upon returning to Thailand at 17, he took up his first job as a manual labourer. In 1944, Chin founded Bangkok Bank, which started with only two shophouses. The bank later expanded and diversified into Hong Kong. Chin lived in Hong Kong from 1957 on, when Thailand came under the rule of Sarit Thanarat, after he fell out of favour with the former dictator. Chris Baker (writer)
Christopher John Baker (born 3 January 1948) is a Thailand-based British writer who has made his home in Bangkok for more than 30 years. He is the co-author of ''A History of Thailand'', ''Thaksin: The Business of Politics in Thailand'', ''Thailand's Boom and Bust'', and ''Thailand's Crisis'', all written with his wife, Dr. Pasuk Phongpaichit. He was the principal writer of the United Nations Development Programme's ''Thailand Human Development Report 2007: Sufficiency Economy and Human Development'', which praised King Bhumibol Adulyadej's self-sufficient economy theory. In 2010, Chris Baker and his wife Pasuk Phongpaichit published a compilation and translation of the Thai epic poem ''Khun Chang Khun Phaen''. The Democrat Party ( th, พรรคประชาธิปัตย์; ) is a Thai political party. The oldest party in Thailand, it was founded as a royalist party, and now upholds a conservative and pro- market position. The Democrat Party made its best showings in parliament in 1948, 1976, and 1996. It has never won an outright parliamentary majority. The party's electoral support bases are southern Thailand and Bangkok, although election results in Bangkok have fluctuated widely. Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat (also spelt ''Dhanarajata''; th, สฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์, ; 16 June 1908 – 8 December 1963) was a Thai general who staged a coup in 1957, replacing Plaek Phibunsongkhram as Thailand's prime minister until Sarit died in 1963.
