''Chim Chim Cheree'' is an album by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, recorded in 2009 and released by Venus Records in 2010. Eric Alexander (jazz Saxophonist)
Eric Alexander (born August 4, 1968) is an American jazz saxophonist. Early life and education Alexander was born in Illinois. He began as a classical musician, studying alto saxophone at Indiana University with Eugene Rousseau in 1986. He soon switched to jazz and the tenor saxophone, however, and transferred to William Paterson University, where he studied with Harold Mabern, Rufus Reid, Joe Lovano, Gary Smulyan, Norman Simmons, Steve Turre and others. Career Alexander finished second at the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. He was soon signed by a record label. Alexander has worked with many jazz musicians, including Chicago pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Idris Muhammad, and guitarist Pat Martino. He is part of Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet with Peter Bernstein, and Joe Farnsworth. He has recorded and toured extensively with the sextet, One for All. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. Venus Records
Venus Records is a Japanese jazz record label. It was founded in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who had worked as a producer for RCA Victor. It mostly works with a select group of artists from Italy, the United States, and Japan, and uses a signature 24-bit mastering process, named "Hyper Magnum Sound," that produces "very powerful sound with strong presence". It is also known for its album covers, which use well-known photographers and frequently feature nudity. Todd Barkan
Todd Barkan (born August 13, 1946) is an American jazz impresario and producer. Biography Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Barkan grew up in Columbus, Ohio and attended Oberlin College. He ran a club in San Francisco called Keystone Korner from 1972 to 1983, which became, in the words of journalist Bob Margolis, "legendary for its adventurous bookings and its bohemian ambience". A fan of jazz from a young age, Barkan ran the club despite its inability to break even, and financial troubles resulted in its closure in 1983. Barkan then relocated to New York City, where he became the manager of the Boys Club of Harlem; around 1990 he returned to the Bay Area to manage the club Yoshi's in Oakland. He quit Yoshi's in 1993 and worked as a record producer for the rest of the decade, with labels such as Fantasy, Milestone, HighNote, Columbia, Sunnyside, and Concord, as well as many Japanese labels. Harold Mabern
Harold Mabern Jr. (March 20, 1936 – September 17, 2019) was an American jazz pianist and composer, principally in the hard bop, post-bop, and soul jazz fields.Feather, Leonard; Gitler, Ira (2007) ''The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz''. p. 425. John Robert Webber (born August 5, 1965) is an American jazz double-bassist. Early life and education Webber was born in St. Louis. He first learned to play bass guitar before switching to stand-up bass at age 15. He attended Northern Illinois University and Roosevelt University in Chicago, where he worked with Von Freeman and Brad Goode. Career Webber relocated to New York City in 1987 and played with Bill Hardman, Junior Cook, Tardo Hammer, John Marshall, and Michael Weiss before the end of the decade. Joseph Allen Farnsworth (born February 21, 1968, Holyoke, Massachusetts) is an American jazz drummer. Farnsworth was one of five sons born to trumpeter and bandleader Roger Farnsworth; one of the brothers played saxophone in Ray Charles Ray Charles Robinson Sr. (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. The ''IAJRC Journal'' is an American quarterly magazine published by the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors. The journal was established in 1968, 4 years after the association was founded in Pittsburgh. The first issue was published during the first quarter of 1968. It covers the history of jazz — which includes the history of jazz criticism and jazz discography. History and background The journal reviews about 200 albums and 12 books, annually. One of its sister products is the IAJRC record label, which, as of 2014, has in excess of 77 titles. The journal is not formally peer reviewed. Because the organization is bent towards rare and old recordings, coverage by the journal leans towards, but is not limited to, historic jazz.
