Chile competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. Chilean Olympic Committee ( es, Comité Olímpico de Chile, ''COCH'') sent a total of 22 athletes to the Games, 16 men and 6 women, to compete in 11 sports; the nation's team size was roughly smaller from Sydney by almost half of the athletes, due to the absence of the men's football team. Six Chilean athletes had previously competed in Sydney, including tennis star and top medal favorite Nicolás Massú. Long-distance freestyle swimmer and Pan American Games bronze medalist Kristel Köbrich set a historic milestone as the nation's first ever female flag bearer in the opening ceremony, wearing and parading with a traditional Chilean costume. Chilean Olympic Committee
The Chilean Olympic Committee (COCh) (:es:Comité Olímpico Chile, Comité Olímpico Chile) is a non-profit private organization composed of all Chilean sports federations who join it and accept its governance through statutes and regulations. It was created on 20 June 1934 and recognised the same year by the International Olympic Committee. The Committee is the organization in charge of coordinating Olympic activities in Chile. Cristóbal Mauricio Silva Ibaceta (born October 12, 1979 in Santiago) is a Chilean amateur mountain biker. The men's points race in cycling at the 2004 Summer Olympics consisted of a 160 lap (40 kilometre) points race with 16 sprints where points were awarded. The event was held on 24 August 2004 at the Athens Olympic Velodrome. There were 23 competitors from 23 nations, with each nation limited to one cyclist in the event. The event was won by Mikhail Ignatiev of Russia, the nation's first victory in the men's points race. Spain's Joan Llaneras, the defending champion, took silver; he was the first and only person (of any gender) to win multiple medals in the relatively short-lived points race, and ended with three medals after another gold in 2008. Marco Antonio Arriagada Quinchel (born October 30, 1975 in Curicó) is a Chilean professional racing cyclist. He is the brother of cyclist Marcelo Arriagada. He carried the flag for his native country at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These are the results of the men's C-1 1000 metres competition in canoeing at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The C-1 event is raced by single-man sprint canoes. Medalists Heats The 19 competitors first raced in three heats. The first-place finishers from each of the heats advanced directly to the final, and the remaining 16 canoers moved on to the two semifinal races. The heats were raced on August 23. Semifinals The top three finishers in each of the two semifinals advanced to the finals, joining the three canoers who had moved directly from the heats. All other canoers were eliminated. The women's pole vault competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens was held at the Olympic Stadium on 21–24 August. Competition format The competition consisted of two rounds, qualification and final. Athletes start with a qualifying round. Jumping in turn, each athlete attempts to achieve the qualifying height. If they fail at three jumps in a row, they are eliminated. After a successful jump, they receive three more attempts to achieve the next height. Once all jumps have been completed, all athletes who have achieved the qualifying height go through to the final.
