Arthur Child (judge)
The Honourable Arthur Child (20 November 1852 – 24 August 1902)CHILD, Arthur’, Who Was Who, A & C Black, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing plc, 1920–2007 was a British lawyer, jurist and colonial administrator who was Chief Justice of St Lucia from 1890 to 1902. Career Child was born in 1852, the 11th child of Henry Child, a solicitor in London. He was from a family of lawyers; two of his father′s brothers were also solicitors. He was educated privately at Priory-house School, Clapton and the University College London, and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple on 17 November 1876. After practicing on the South Eastern Circuit at the Mayor′s Court and the Central Criminal Court, he left for the West Indies when he was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate at San Fernando, Trinidad in 1882. Simon James Law Child (born 16 April 1988) is a field hockey player from New Zealand, who earned his first cap for the national team, ''The Black Sticks'', in 2005 against Malaysia. Personal life Simon Child was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. He has a younger brother, Marcus, who also plays representative hockey for New Zealand. Career Club Hockey At club level, Child plays hockey for his home city of Auckland in the New Zealand National Hockey League. Samuel Child
Samuel Child (1693 – 1 October 1752) was an English banker and politician. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bishop's Castle from 1747 to 1752. Child was the 11th son of Sir Francis Child, a banker, MP, and Lord Mayor of London in 1698. He was a partner in the family bank Child & Co. until the death in 1740 of his brother Francis, when he became head of the bank. At the 1747 general election, he was invited to stand as a Tory candidate for Middlesex, where his family owned land. However, he had previously promised his support to Sir Roger Newdigate, and instead stood for Bishop's Castle. The borough's patron, John Walcot, borrowed £8,500 (£ in ) from Child's bank, and Child was returned unopposed. After his death in October 1752, aged 59, he was succeeded as head of the bank firstly by his son Francis, and after Francis's death in 1763 by his younger son Robert. Peter Burlingham Child (born 6 May 1953) is an American composer, teacher, and musical analyst. He is Professor of Music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a composer in residence with the New England Philharmonic. Education and career Child took his first composition lessons at the age of 12 with Bernard Barrell. He began attending Keele University in Staffordshire, England, but transferred to Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1973 in a junior-year exchange program.
