Chilaw
Chilaw ( si, හලාවත, translit=Halāvata, ta, சிலாபம், translit=Cilāpam) is a large town in Puttalam District, North Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is governed by an urban council. The town is located 80 kilometres away from Colombo via Negombo. Etymology The name Chilaw derives its name from its Tamil name ''Cilāpam'', meaning pearl fishery. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral The seat of the Chilaw Diocese, this cathedral has a history of more than two centuries. According to legend, 200 years ago, most of what is now Chilaw Town was covered by a forest. A woman was searching for firewood and heard the sound of a lady speaking, "Please take me". She stopped her work and searched for the source of the sound. A statue of Mother Mary was on a tree. The woman took the statue and handed over it to the parish priest who recognized it as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Many believe that this same statue now stands in the cathedral. Victor Corea
Charles Edward Victor Seneviratne Corea was born in Chilaw, Sri Lanka, on 29 January 1871 to Charles Edward Bandaranaike Corea, a famous lawyer, and Henrietta Seneviratne. He was the youngest out of five children, three boys and two girls, Charles Edgar Corea, James Alfred Ernest Corea, Agnes Corea and Evangeline Corea. This family was acknowledged to be one of the wealthiest families in the whole of Ceylon. Victor's family was severely affected when Charles Edward Bandaranaike Corea died in 1872, leaving five children, of whom the youngest, Victor Corea, was only one year old. The five young children depended on their young, widowed 21-year-old mother to look after them. He attended the prestigious S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where he excelled in his studies. Charles Edgar Corea
Charles Edgar Corea was a politician and a prominent freedom fighter of Sri Lanka. Early life C.E.Corea was born in the west coast town of Chilaw, in Sri Lanka. His parents were Charles Edward Bandaranaike Corea, a leading lawyer from Chilaw and Henritta Seneviratne. He was educated at Royal College Colombo where he excelled in his studies. He earned a reputation as a first rate orator. Charles Edgar Corea was the eldest of five children. Chilaw Marians Cricket Club
Chilaw Marians Cricket Club are a first-class cricket team based in Chilaw, Sri Lanka. They play their home games at FTZ Sports Complex. The club has won the Premier League one day Tournament in 2005. More successful in limited overs cricket, Chilaw reached the final of the International 20:20 Club Championship in 2005. Negombo (, ) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the west coast and at the mouth of the Negombo Lagoon, in Western Province, from Colombo via Colombo - Katunayake Expressway. North Western Province, Sri Lanka
North Western Province ( si, වයඹ පළාත ''Wayamba Paḷāta'', ta, வட மேல் மாகாணம் ''Vada Mael Mākāṇam'') is a province of Sri Lanka. The province consists of the districts of Kurunegala and Puttalam. The Right Reverend Edmund Pieris ( Sinhala: එඩ්මන්ඩ් පීරිස්), O.M.I. (27 December 1897 – 4 September 1989) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Chilaw, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). He was born in Chilaw, the son of Mihindukulasuriya Manuel Diogu Pieris and Weerasinghage Clara Peiris and educated at St. Joseph's College, Colombo. He entered St. Bernard's Seminary in Borello, Colombo to study for the priesthood and was ordained in 1924, after which he graduated in Oriental Studies at the University of London.
