The Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff ( el, Αρχηγός του Γενικού Επιτελείου Ναυτικού, Archigós tou Genikoú Epiteleíou Naftikoú, abbrev. Α/ΓΕΝ) is the head of the Hellenic Navy General Staff and commander of the Hellenic Navy. The position is customarily held by a three-star flag officer ( vice admiral). As part of Greece's membership in NATO, from 1967 until 1999 the Chief of the HNGS was also commander of NATO's COMEDEAST. Sofoklis Dousmanis
Sofoklis Dousmanis ( el, Σοφοκλής Δούσμανης, 25 December 1868 – 6 January 1952) was a Greek naval officer. Distinguished in the Balkan Wars, he became twice the chief of the Greek Navy General Staff, and occupied the post of Minister for Naval Affairs in 1935. Life Sofoklis Dousmanis was born in Corfu on 25 December 1868, a descendant of a branch of the Dushmani family that had emigrated to Corfu in the 15th century; he was the grandson of Antonio Dusmani and brother of Viktor Dousmanis. He entered the Hellenic Naval Academy on 20 May 1884 and graduated on 18 June 1888 as a Line Ensign. Konstantinos Typaldos-Alfonsatos
Konstantinos Typaldos-Alfonsatos ( el, Κωνσταντίνος Τυπάλδος-Αλφονσάτος, 1873–1945) was a Greek Navy officer. He served briefly as Minister for Naval Affairs (1922), Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (1927), and Inspector General of the Navy (1929–31), retiring with the rank of vice admiral. Life Born in Athens in 1873, Konstantinos Typaldos-Alfonsatos entered the Hellenic Navy Academy on 2 September 1887 and graduated on 31 August 1891 as a Line Ensign. In 1897, on board torpedo boat ''16'', he participated in the naval operations around Crete, as well as in the subsequent Greco-Turkish War. During the latter conflict he took part in the landing operations at Leptokarya; when his captain, Sub-Lieutenant Emmanouil Antoniadis, was killed, he took over command of the vessel. The Ministry for Naval Affairs ( el, Ὑπουργείον πὶτῶν Ναυτικῶν) was a government department of Greece responsible for matters pertaining to the Greek Navy as well as the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry. The ministry was established in 1822, when the Provisional Administration of Greece was formed following the start of the Greek War of Independence, with the name Ministry for Naval Affairs (Μινιστέριον των Ναυτικών). Ioannis Demestichas ( el, Ιωάννης Δεμέστιχας, 1882–1960) was a Hellenic Navy officer. He is best known for his participation in the Macedonian Struggle under the ''nom de guerre'' of Kapetan Nikiforos (Καπετάν Νικηφόρος). Christos Louis, nicknamed Kitsos, is a Greek Molecular Geneticist. He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Marburg in 1974 and joined the team of Prof. C.E. Sekeris, first at Marburg and then at the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg, obtaining his doctoral degree in Cell biology from Heidelberg University in 1977.
