Chief Of Defence Force (New Zealand)
The Chief of Defence Force (CDF) is the appointment held by the professional head of the New Zealand Defence Force. The post has existed under its present name since 1991. From 1963 to 1991 the head of the New Zealand Defence Force was known as the Chief of Defence Staff. All the incumbents have held three-star rank. The current Chief of Defence Force is Air Marshal Kevin Short. Role The CDF is the professional head of the defence forces and serves as the principal military advisor to the government. They are responsible for directing the chiefs of service and ensuring morale. The CDF also serves as the chief executive of the defence force, thereby being the person with sole accountability to the government and people of New Zealand. Kevin Short (RNZAF Officer)
Air Marshal Kevin Ronald Short, is a Royal New Zealand Air Force officer, serving as Chief of Defence Force since 1 July 2018. Short joined the Air Force in 1976. He served as Commander, Crib Rotation 9, the Provincial Reconstruction Team, in the early years of New Zealand's deployment to Bamiyan, Afghanistan. In June 2011 Short was appointed Deputy Chief of Air Force, before being appointed Commander Joint Forces New Zealand from 25 February 2013. He assumed the role of Vice Chief of Defence Force on 31 March 2014. After four years in the post, Short was promoted air marshal and succeeded Lieutenant General Tim Keating as Chief of Defence Force on 1 July 2018. Neil Anderson (RNZN Officer)
Vice Admiral Sir Neil Dudley Anderson, (5 April 1927 – 5 June 2010) was a senior officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). He served as Chief of Naval Staff, the professional head of the RNZN, from 1978 to 1980 and as Chief of Defence Staff from 1980 to 1983. He married the author Barbara Anderson in 1951, and the couple had two children. He died on 5 June 2010 aged 83. Anderson was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1967 Queen's Birthday Honours, and advanced to Commander of the same order in the 1977 New Year Honours. Also in 1977, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. Tim Keating (soldier)
Lieutenant General Timothy James Keating is a former New Zealand Army officer and Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force. He was appointed Chief of Defence Force in 2014, immediately following his tenure as Vice Chief of Defence Force. He served as Chief of Army from 2011 to 2012. Keating served as Commander, Crib Rotation 6, the Provincial Reconstruction Team, in the early years of the deployment to Bamiyan, Afghanistan. Keating was promoted to lieutenant general and took over as Chief of Defence Force (CDF) for a three-year term on 1 February 2014. On 3 April 2018 Keating announced he would be stepping down as CDF on the completion of his term on 30 June. Keating did not give a reason for his resignation, but said he was not standing down due to the allegations about Operation Burnham in 2010 which was the subject of the book '' Hit & Run''. Rhys Jones (soldier)
Lieutenant General Richard Rhys Jones, (born 2 May 1960) is a retired senior New Zealand Army officer, who was the Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force from 2011 to 2014. He was succeeded by Lieutenant General Tim Keating. Early life Jones was born in Timaru and is the son of Methodist minister Alan Jones. Jones is the youngest in a family of nine, six in his immediate family plus three half-brothers including writer Owen Marshall Jones. He is a former pupil of Wanganui Boys' College. Lieutenant General Sir Jeremiah Mateparae (born 14 November 1954) is a former New Zealand soldier who served as the 20th Governor-General of New Zealand between 2011 and 2016, the second Māori person to hold the office, after Sir Paul Reeves. A former officer in the New Zealand Army, he was Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force from 2006 to 2011, and then served as the director of the New Zealand Government Communications Security Bureau for five months in 2011. Carey Adamson
Air Marshal Carey William Adamson, (5 September 1942 – 10 May 2019) was a senior officer of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Adamson grew up in Fairlie before attending Timaru Boys' High School, where he was a boarder apart from his final year, when he commuted daily on his motorcycle. As a teenager, Adamson joined the Air Training Corps. He then joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1961, where he served as a pilot flying Austers and Harvards. In 1964 Adamson was assigned to the United States to train on the C130 Hercules. He was Chief of the Air Staff from 1995 to 1999 and Chief of Defence Force from 1999 to 2001. Vice Admiral Sir Somerford Francis Teagle (born 9 June 1938) is a retired senior officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). Teagle was born in Lower Hutt on 9 June 1938. His parents were Leonard Herbert Teagle and Muriel Frances Teagle (). He was educated at Wellesley College in Wellington, Christ's College in Christchurch, the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, the Joint Services Staff College in Canberra, and the Canadian National Defence College. David Crooks (RNZAF Officer)
Air Marshal David Manson Crooks, (8 December 1931 – 9 March 2022) was a senior commander of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was Chief of the Air Staff from April 1983 to October 1986 and Chief of the Defence Staff thereafter until 1987 when he retired. Crooks was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1969 Queen's Birthday Honours, and a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1985 New Year Honours. Air Marshal Sir David Ewan Jamieson, (19 April 1930 – 21 March 2013) was a senior commander in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
