''Chick Carter, Detective'' is a 1946 Columbia film serial. Columbia could not afford the rights to produce a Nick Carter serial so they made ''Chick Carter, Detective'' about his son instead. This was based on the radio series '' Chick Carter, Boy Detective''. A Nick Carter series was being made by MGM. In a "rather strange precedent" for a serial, the title character is rarely involved in the cliffhangers. For example, the first cliffhanger revolves around the reporter Rusty rather than Carter. The film starred Lyle Talbot as Chick Carter, Douglas Fowley as Rusty Farrell, Julie Gibson as Sherry Marvin, Pamela Blake as Ellen Dale, Eddie Acuff as Spud Warner, and Robert Elliott as Dan Rankin. Derwin Abrahams (1903–1974) was an American film director. He directed four serials in the 1940s for Columbia Pictures, including ''Hop Harrigan'', ''Chick Carter, Detective'', ''Tex Granger'', and ''Son of the Guardsman'', followed by ''The Great Adventures of Captain Kidd'' in 1953.Cline, William C. Jack Ingram (actor)
John Samuel Ingram (November 15, 1902 – February 20, 1969) was an American film and television actor. He appeared in many serials and Westerns between 1935 and 1966. Biography Ingram served in the U.S. Army in France. After leaving the military, he gave up plans to study law and instead joined a traveling minstrel show. He acted in stock theater with several companies before going into film. Ingram first appeared on screen in a bit part in ''Westward Ho'' (1935). His first film credit came in the serial ''Zorro Rides Again'' (1937). In addition to acting, Ingram was a stunt man, working with horses and cars in films in the early 1930s. He was born in Frankfort, Illinois, and died in Canoga Park, California, of a heart attack. He was interred in the Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Chatsworth, California. ''Son of the Guardsman'' is an American film serial released in 1946 by Columbia Pictures. It was the 31st of the 57 serials produced by that studio. ''Son of the Guardsman'' is a rare serial with a period setting, in this case 12th century England. The serial is largely based on the Robin Hood legends, to the extent of including outlaws from Sherwood Forest, but it does not include or reference Robin Hood himself. The serial was produced by the notoriously cheap Sam Katzman and directed by Derwin Abrahams. ''Hop Harrigan'' (aka ''Hop Harrigan America's Ace of the Airways'') (1946) is a Columbia film serial, based on the Hop Harrigan comic books by DC Comics. The serial comprised 15 two-reel chapters with Derwin Abrahams as the director, and Sam Katzman, the producer. Columbia Pictures was one of the last Hollywood studios to continue in postwar years with the serial format. By 1947, Universal Pictures discontinued their serials, with only Republic Pictures and Columbia continuing with serials. The last serial was Columbia's ''Blazing the Overland Trail'' (1956). This is a list of film serials by studio, separated into those released by each of the five major studios, and the remaining minor studios. The five major studios produced the greater number of serials. Of these the main studios are considered to be Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Republic Pictures. All three were active during the 1930s and 1940s. The other two major studios are Mascot Pictures, which later merged into Republic, and Pathé Exchange, which ceased serial production before the advent of sound.
