Chicago Zoo
Brookfield Zoo Chicago, also known as the Chicago Zoological Park, is a zoo located in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield, Illinois. It houses around 450 species of animals in an area of . It opened on July 1, 1934, and quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches instead of cages to separate animals from visitors and from other animals. The zoo was also the first in United States of America, America to exhibit giant pandas, one of which (Su Lin (1930s giant panda), Su Lin) has been taxidermy, taxidermied and put on display in Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. In 1960, Brookfield Zoo Chicago built the nation's first fully indoor dolphin exhibit, and in the 1980s, the zoo introduced Tropic World, the first fully indoor rainforest simulation and the then-largest indoor zoo exhibit in the world. Brookfield (formerly Grossdale) is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, located west of downtown Chicago. Per the 2020 census, the population was 19,476. The city is home to the Brookfield Zoo. Geography Brookfield is located at (41.822681, -87.847532). According to the 2010 census, Brookfield has a total area of , of which (or 99.77%) is land and (or 0.23%) is water. Most of Brookfield is flat land with various small hills and rises. Along Salt Creek is a steep ravine that is home to many oak savannas.
