Chicago City Clerk
The City Clerk of Chicago is in charge of record-keeping for the city of Chicago and its elections. When the Chicago City Council is in session, the City Clerk serves as council secretary. This position is a citywide elected office, one of three city-wide elected officials in the City of Chicago, with the Mayor and the Treasurer being the others. The current city clerk is Anna Valencia. Duties The City Clerk's office is responsible for maintaining official city government record (such as the Municipal Code of Chicago), distributing approximately 1.3 million vehicle stickers and residential parking permits, and issuing city business licenses. Tremont House (Chicago)
The Tremont House was a hotel located in Chicago, Illinois. A modern hotel also bears the same name. Original First hotel The original hotel's building was built in 1833. It was a three-story wooden structure located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Lake Street and Dearborn Street. It was lost to a fire in 1839. It took its name from the Boston Tremont House. It was later recounted by a reporter that he recalled the hotel having been a three-story frame structure approximately long and wide. The building was originally a rooming house. Its original proprietor of the property was Starr Foot, who sold it to Malliory & Able in 1835. The operation was then sold to a man named Dorwin in 1837. Dorwin sold the lease months later that year to brothers Ira Couch and James Couch. Thomas Hoyne
His Honor, the Mayor, Thomas Hoyne, Esquire (February 11, 1817July 27, 1883) was elected Mayor of Chicago in 1876, but his election was later declared null and void by a Circuit Court. Prior to 1876, Hoyne had led a political career in which he had occupied numerous state and municipal offices. Life and career Hoyne moved to Chicago in 1837, where he turned his back on the mercantile life he had been leading and studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1839. He was elected Chicago city clerk in 1840. In 1853, he was appointed United States District Attorney for Illinois. Six years later, he became a US Marshal for the northern district of Illinois. James Curtiss
James Curtiss (also Curtis; March 29, 1806 – November 2, 1859) was an American politician who twice served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1847–1848 and 1850–1851) for the Democratic Party. Early life Born on April 7, 1806 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Curtiss became a printer's apprentice at an early age in Philadelphia. He worked for a time at the Portland ''Argus'', then was printer, and eventually editor and publisher of the Eastport ''Northern Light'', a Jackson Democrat newspaper. Caspar Butz
Caspar Butz (October 23, 1825 – October 19, 1885) was a German American journalist and politician, born in Hagen, Kingdom of Prussia, who served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1858 to 1860 and as City Clerk of Chicago from 1876 to 1879. Biography Butz was a Forty Eighter who immigrated to the United States in 1851, settling first in Boston. A journalist by trade, he quickly became politically active and joined the newly created Republican Party, serving as a political writer for both the Frémont and Lincoln campaigns. Butz himself was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1858, where he served alongside Ebenezer Peck as Representative from the 57th District.
